So the wife and I have narrowed it down to two different TT we like, same company just two different sizes. I was hoping for some feed back from experience you all have pulling these size trailers with a half-ton truck (2021 Ram, 5.7L Hemi, 4x4) I will be adding the Hellwig sway bar and am in the process of deciding on which WDH I will be going with, which brings me to my next question, which one is the best as far as functionality and ease of use? I saw the weigh safe one looked pretty straight forward but also see alot of people mentioning the blue ox and others, so it is a little confusing.....Also, should I add airbags?

below are the two we were thinking of purchasing from what we have seen so far

Grand Design
2670 MK

Grand Design
2970RL

Any advise would be greatly appreciated

What is the max payload listed on your door sticker?

That's a nice, healthy Big Horn payload capacity - 1,683 lbs. You could probably handle either trailer from a payload standpoint, but you'll be fairly tight with the 2970RL. Looks like it has an empty hitch weight of 751 lbs. Load up the trailer to 9000 lbs, and you're probably at 950-1000 lbs on the hitch.
So from a payload standpoint, you'll have:
  • Passengers - two? Figure 300 lbs, maybe 400?
  • WDH - 100 lbs
  • Hitch load - 1000 lbs
  • Other cargo in the cab?
  • Other cargo in the bed?
So you could be getting close to the 1683 payload capacity. I imagine you'll be fine unless you go crazy with things.

I'm not knowledgeable on WDH's, but there are several on here who are. @devildodge is one of the resident experts that I've seen.

Either trailer will work for your specific truck. Based on my experience towing a 33’ 9000lb GVWR trailer, 7600lbs loaded, with the 4th gen and now 5th gen air bags in the coils out back are a necessity when you have anything approaching 1’000lbs on the hitch. I tow with a blue ox with 1200lb bars (old design pre-2013) and despite good reviews would stay away from the Andersen on any coil spring rear truck, it doesn’t provide enough weight distribution back to the front wheels and leaves the truck wandering.

I can’t tell from the specs on my phone, but make sure the fresh water tank is over the axles of the trailer. I’ve seen a few models lately that have the freshwater tank at the front of the trailer and travelling with a full load of water creates an unpleasant experience that can unload the front wheels of the truck too much.

Thank you for the reply. Yes, there will be two of us, I am about 190 and my wife is 125 (so she says, haha) and a 12ib min pin in the cab, didn't plan on putting much in the bed, maybe 100ibs approx. I figured most things I would put in the trailer so I don't weigh down the truck too much.

Thanks for the info. When you mention 33', do you mean bumper to toung or box lenght? Also, how was the tow with that length?

I use the blue ox sway pro and it works very good to move weight up to the steer axle and back to the trailer axles. Plus it almost completely eliminates sway. I was able to get my truck and trailer completely level with no need for air bags and was able to get my steer axle on the truck under load back to the unloaded weight (CAT scale measured). I have a 32' trailer that is ~6800 lbs ready to camp (Alpha Wolf 26 DBH-L).

Do you have any previous TT towing experience?

How far do you plan on traveling?
I would consider my self a novice compared to most, pulled trailers before, never a TT.

As far as distance.... that's a variable we plan to just travel around and when the time comes to upgrade or come back home we will do either. I work from a home office for some time now so figured why not do that in a trailer seeing the country. Which is the reason I was looking at those two options, one has a small desk and the larger of the two has a couch that would be removed and a desk space put in its place.

The I’d go with the 2670MK, being 2 ft shorter and 550 lbs lighter than the 2970RL.

The 2670 is realistically going to be 7k lbs dry. At 32’ long, 8500 lb GVWR it will still be a lot of trailer for the 1500

I was thinking that one might be more practical, however I did like the extra space in the other one even though it was minimal. I appreciate your input!

We did about 12,000 miles with a 31’ long, 5200 lbs dry (~6,500 lbs loaded) before upgrading to a 33’ long, 6800 lbs dry (~8200 lbs loaded) camper.

I feel this is the limit of the 1500

33 box or total length? How did it tow? Cause I believe those numbers are comparable to the 2970RL I was looking at and prefer. But I agree that is probably the maximum while still being safe(from what I've researched and have been told)

box is about 30’, as overall is 33’

the 2970RL is about 700 lbs heavier than mine dry

2670, will be a better first experience. if you like it, prob not your last TT.

if you can find a used ProPride or Hensley, well worth the $

you’ll have fun either way!
