This article on the Hemi MDS was enlightening. I had an idea of how it worked, and I was completely wrong. It does shut four cylinders down, but it increases fuel to the other cylinders to compensate. How does it save fuel then? There's a mechanical advantage to not having to pull in and push out air and exhaust from the de-activated cylinders, and that's where the savings come from...a reduction in "pumping losses". Never would have guessed it. Motor Trend wrote an article on it, and it's the most informative piece I can find on the system.
