New RAM owner ('22)(and not mechanically knowledgeable). Isn't the idea or goal of turning off MDS to hopefully avoid lifter failure down the road?

No, it's to save on gas. Some people say it's what causes lifter failure, but there isn't any evidence that backs that up.
 
MDS doesn’t cause lifter/cam failures. That’s a myth. People disable MDS for various reasons. I disable it because I don’t like how the exhaust sounds when the engine is running on four cylinders. Some people claim they can’t tell when it’s active, but with an aftermarket exhaust it’s very obvious to me.
