Low Max Tow Capacity?

My payload (1521) and tow capacity (8321) just showed up on the ram website; im happy with my payload, but the towing seems a bit low? I’ve got 4x4 hemi CC, i do have the 3.21 gears and im not planning to tow a lot—but it seems like i’m a lot lower than other i’ve seen post?

Looks right, it’s because of the 3.21’s
 
the 3.91 is really would add a lot to capacity?

I don’t plan to tow much so im not too worried, the weight limit on my utility trailer is much lower. I was just expecting it to be in the 9-10k lbs range.

Very happy I’m over 1500lbs for payload though.

Yes with your payload, 3.92’s would’ve given you a 11,421 lbs tow capacity
 
You're worried about nothing, really.

1521 payload. 4 people in the cab, 6-800 of that is gone. If you put anything in the bed, even more is gone. But let's be generous and say you're fit and trim. You have 921 pounds left to play with. That's 11% of your max tow. That's pretty light in the tongue. Even if you had the lower gears and the higher tow capacity, you still wouldn't be able to pull much more without going over the payload.

Unless you aren't towing with 4 people in the truck.

I’m a little naive when it comes to towing…

so let’s assume i have 800 lbs in truck between people/gear; that leaves me 721lbs payload.

that 721 has to cover tongue weight of trailer?

Do trailers typically list that? or it’s a % of trailer weight?

If there is a Weight distribution hitch does that make a difference?

Yes, tongue weight consumes payload.

Trailer manufacturers typically list the tongue weight of a dry and stripped trailer. When you add LP, cargo, etc that will go up depending how the trailer is loaded.

A WDH adds weight to your truck, reducing payload depending how heavy the hitch is. They're used to transfer weight to the front axle, more than reduce tongue weight.

Go back and check out the sticky threads at the top of this forum. But yes, trailers usually list some fantasy numbers. The reality is you want 10-15% of the trailer on the tongue. And a WDH keeps you from exceeding the rear axle weight rating by moving some of the weight to the front axle. You might be within cargo weight and combined weight but be exceeding the axle weight.
