LED Runnibg Boards (step)

I am wanting to get some outdoor LED strip lights, mount them to the running boards and have them activate with the entry lights under the mirror. For example, I hit the unlock on the FOB and they light up.
What is the easiest way that someone has found to tap into the wires for it?
What did you do wrong during the installation?
How did you wish you did it now that hindsight is 20/20?

Seems pretty simple- find what is providing voltage to the mirror puddle lights and tap that. As always, make sure you’re not overloading the circuit.

The cargo light in the 3rd brake light does what you want. Wire to that.
If you have bed cargo lights, that’s a closer wire to clamp to
