Hi all, Could anyone tell me if a long range fuel tank of 53 gallons is installed, can the computer that controls the mpg usage and distance to go, be reconfigured to accommodate the larger tank. The vehicle is a Laramie 1500 5.7 12" screen MY21 build.
Thanks in advance.

53 gallons? Where the heck would you mount the thing other than in the bed? I don't see a tank that large fitting in the stock location.

Thanks for your reply. Here in Australia ARB are selling these fuel tanks for all sorts of vehicles including the Ram 1500. Its a common upgrade. Before I get the vehicle which is ordered, I wanted to know if the installation was going to cause problems for the fuel gauge and associated electronics or will the trucks computer just sort itself out.

You would definitely need to reprogram the computer. It won't just pick it up and sort itself out. That's what needs to be done when upgrading to the larger stock tanks. I have no idea on that tank though.

Got a link? Because when I hunted for it, I found the Long Ranger which is only for the DS trucks. Maybe that's all they sell in Australia? DS= Classic/ 5 lug. DT is the new 6 lug.

It's likely that the only people who have any experience with that tank are going to be other Aussies. Like Vincent said, it's not going to be plug and play. But I'd really love to have a tank that big in my Laramie. I wonder if they would ship to the states?

Just go by the odometer, figure on 53 gallons at around 15 mpg will get you 795 miles. To be safe fuel up after 600 miles

I am working on a 72 Gal tank for the Bed. This with the 33 Stock Tank
would give me 105 Gal X 29 mpg = 3045 Miles! If the GDE tune later this year
gets another 1-2 MPG would increase that total up to 3255 Miles.

I didn't think Federal DOT regulations would let you put a GASOLINE tank in the bed of a truck... I know Diesel tanks are acceptable....

Maybe Brown Davis ships to the USA as saw Ram 2500 with an additional 33 gal from them. See this vid @ 15.20

My '21 Laramie is an EcoDiesel. On my '08 Bighorn I took the bottom 8" of the
Bed Rail Tool Box and converted that. This added 36 Gallons to the Stock 26. I
would get about 900+ miles with the Hemi.

There are three major items to worry about. EPA says you have to pull from
the top of the Tank. So no direct drain to the Main Tank. DOT says you have
to use OEM or better parts. I put in SS Braided Lines with all the Aircraft Fittings.
Then there is the Truck's Computer. You have to have a closed system, so the
Tanks need a vent between them too. Leaving it open would throw a Code that
the Fill cap was loose or missing. If you set it up as a Drain system, then the
Fuel Gauge would stay full until the AUX tank was empty. This would throw a
Code that the Fuel Level Sending unit or Gauge was bad. I can switch on the
transfer pump (30 Gal/hr) while driving. As long as the Gauge goes up and
down the Truck is Happy. The Vent and Transfer Lines go near the top of the
Filler Neck.

Thank you Malodave, that is very useful info. Much appreciated.
Tom
I will be doing a full install thread with pictures once it is installed. The
Same goes with the Cab Light install. Yesterday I picked up the full sized
Print of the Template. I will double check the position of the Main Large
Hole for the Cab Lights and Modify the Template if needed.

I have the lift booked for all Day Monday to do a lot of the Mods to the
Truck I have planned. There is still some Fabrication on the AUX Tank before
I give it to the Welder. I am on my 4th Iteration on the Switch Panel to replace
the Sunglass Cubby now.

I still have to fab the two top mounting brackets and finish the
Filler neck mounting ring. Then it all goes to a friend to weld.
The size is 60"W x 20"T x 14.5"D. This calculates to 72 Gallons.
This is also sized for my 6'-4" bed. A 5'-7" Bed application would
need to accommodate the Wheel Wells after 5.5" of Depth.

Here is what I have so far:

60" x 120" Bright 3003 Aluminum Diamond Plate $455
Nivert Metal Supply, Throop PA

Brass Screen $6 (To make a filler neck screen)

Filler Neck $37

Diesel Fuel Pump + Spare $23

Steel Weld in Bungs

SS Braided lines AN6 & AN4 4 feet of each

AN6 90º Fitting x 2

AN4 90º Fittings x 2

3/8 NPT to AN6 male Strait x 2

3/8 NPT to AN4 Male Strait x 1

1/8 NPT to AN4 Male Strait x 1

5/8" ID Submersible Fuel Line X 2 ft

Switch

2 conductor 16ga wire

Tap a Fuse

5.2 Gallons per inch
