It is kind of cool i guess but yeah there has to be a solution you could do with a rope or cargo strap.

I had a set of ratchet straps in my 05 2500 just for that purpose. They were just long enough to go from full open to the point they were as short as could be.

Seems like some manufacturer used to have a setup where you routed the cables over something and it held the tailgate at half open?
