Hello Everyone,
I wanted to post a review of my experience with Katzkin to help other folks who might be interested in replacing their seat shells with Katzkin leather.
Ordering. This was easy and straight forward. I sent an inquiry through the website and was contacted by a sales rep almost immediately. He was super helpful, explained pricing and options and helped me get the look I had envisioned (nothing over the top, but something to make the seats have a custom look). I decided on black, factory style covers with the RAM logo embroidered in red on the top of the lean back portions of the front and rear 4 seats. Katzkin is affiliated with several manufacturers, including MOPAR, so they are authorized to product the logo. The covers even have a MOPAR tag sewn in the Katzkin included below the MOPAR logo.
Pricing. Standard, one color seats for my truck were ~$1,895 installed. Adding the embroidered logo was another $300. The same upsell would also apply to multicolored seat options. If you want the cross stitching or the stitched American Flag (I was tempted) that’s a $600 upsell. Adding heated and/cooled seats gets expensive. I have front heated seats, so it wasn’t something I was interested in. The sales rep sent me an Afirm link and I was able to get 12 months same as cash through them, which is pretty cool since we have been on multiple family vacations this summer - spreading out the payments was enough to make me commit to the purchase.
Post Order Pictures. After you tell the salesperson the details of your truck and they confirm everything, you will get a text asking you to send a bunch of pictures of your interior and the last digits of your VIN to make sure they make the right covers. They provide detailed instructions and will tell you if they need more or better pics. They also tell you that if you cancel your order more than 15 minutes after the picture confirmation, you will be charged $500 because they allegedly start making your order that fast.
Timing. It take 3 weeks from the time you order to
Install. This gives them time to make your covers and get them to the installer.
Install. They set up the install appointment and give you the installer contact in case your have to reschedule, etc. My installer was about an hour away which made it inconvenient to drop the truck off and pick up. The installer was not open on the weekend, so I had to take a day off from work for the install. When I arrived, I was shown the driver seat lower cover to confirm the color before it was installed. I asked to see the embroidery and he brought out the backseat cover and I’m glad he did. This is when I discovered they had made the wrong backseat cover. They sent one for a crew cab with center arm rest and not a quad cab with no arm rest. The seat back wouldn’t work and since the lower seat is shorter on the quad cab, they wouldn’t work either. I had the fronts installed and had to wait for the correct rear seat to be shipped and installed a week and a half later. Again, because of the distance, I had to take more time off of work. Katzkin credited me back $150 for the inconvenience and I even received and apology email from the company president. Not bad for a mistake that was a little puzzling since I sent them so many pictures and the VIN number l - but hey, I make mistakes too.
Things people don’t mention. My truck had the deluxe cloth interior with matching cloth inserts in the front door panels. Mention this to the Katzkin sales person, they will send matching inserts for the door panels. The installer does not like this because they have to take the door apart to replace the inserts but in my opinion, not swapping the cloth inserts leaves it looking like an incomplete install. Aslo Katzkin will send a new, matching center console cover. The installer was reluctant to install it because it is pretty close in color to the factory console cover, but I had him swap it out because I paid for it and it’s part of the kit. My covers were made in Mexico. The installer said he has seen them made in California, Mexico and Malaysia.
Overall impressions. I love the seats. Exactly the look I wanted and I believe the price to be very reasonable. Of note, on my invoice it showed the installer received $600 with the remainder going to the covers themselves.
I would definitely use Katzkin in the future and considering that it’s roughly a $2K upgrade to a Bighorn, I think it’s well worth it. Plus I was able to customize the seats in a way I couldn’t with factory leather. They have a three year, 36,000 miles warranty that the installer activates.
Let me know if I can answer any questions you may have. Before and after pictures attached.
