K and N replacement Filter

I recently replaced my filter on a 2020 Ram Hemi Etorque. I noticed that the airduct to the motor had a mesh screen on the end that attaches to the filter box.
Truck does not sound like my 2013 Ram hemi when I installed a K and N filter. Can I remove it or is it functional for some reason.
