I think there is an issue with my truck - Gas Mileage

Hello everyone. Recently I acquired a 2019 Ram Rebel, this was an Upgrade from my 2014 Ram Sport. In my 2014 Ram, I had an upgraded Air intake, a Flowmaster Super10 Muffler and a Custom Tune from a local tuner. I would get roughly 12.5 - 14.5 L/100km on the Highway at 125km/hr. In this new 2019 Rebel, at 108 Km/hr, I was averaging 16L/100km. I did this over a 750 KM trip. This does not seem right to me. Watching a video from this forum posted on YouTube the individual got just over 12l/100km at 70MPH.

I am not at Sea level. My trip was from Fort McMurray to Calgary, Alberta, with Aerodynamic suspension (Air ride suspension)

Am I getting a realistic mileage or is there something wrong?

Yes pretty close to normal. I can get the 12-14 L/100km if I keep it under 105km/h and close to 10-12 L/100km if I am doing 80-90 km/h, over that and it drops fast. You can see my average in my sig below from Fuelly.com

The Rebel won't get good mileage as it has 3.92 gears and sits higher than normal Rams.

Sounds about right for the hemi powered rebel, If I am careful I can almost cut my mileage in half of what a hemi equipped truck gets on the highway. Even with air suspension these trucks are thirsty.

Rebel has 33" tires and 3.92 rear axle, that's about right. The mpg rating that applies to all regular non-offroad packaged trucks doesn't apply to the Rebel for those reasons alone.

If you get less aggressive tires, say Michelin MTX in a 32" size or something similar, your mpg will go up noticeably. However, you will loose the look and off-road capability.

I actually did the conversion, your mpg is actually slightly better than a lot of Rebel owners.

I’m in Calgary, right in line with what I get in my 2021 Rebel. I had a sport that would get 12 l / 100 km with a blower on it. Before the blower it was 10.9 or so at 120 koh. I think the different front end - has a lot to do with it. There is a lot more air going under the truck….

My EcoDiesel Rebel is getting 12.7L/100 in the -20C city driving right now. In normal temps it’s about 11/100 City and I have seen as low as 8.5/100 highway. Only way to go with these trucks.

I also went from a 2014 Ram 1500 Sport with 3.21 axle ratio (which had phenomenal gas mileage for what it was) to a 2020 Rebel and get around the same gas mileage as you also. Do I regret it? No sir not one bit!

If it's gas mileage you most interested in, best to get the eco-diesel, or don't get a Rebel. Nothing in that name suggests easy on fuel.

My 2021 rebel gets 10.2mpg. I don't really hammer it too much.

All of these comments are spot on with my experience as well. Old truck was a 2018 Sport Hemi with 3:92 rear end and I got phenomenal milage with it. 120-125km/hr 11-12 L/100 all day long, drop to 110 (which rarely happens) and could get down under 11. City 14 L/100 maybe 15-16L/100 in the winter with warming up etc. The all time milage (60,000km) on trip B computer when I sold it was 14.5 L/100 including towing my 7500lb trailer every summer. My Rebel however is averaging 21 L/100 (all city) now with no remote start warming and on a recent trip to Edmonton and back (1000km) average was 16 L/100. Doesn’t seem to matter going 105-110 or 120-125 best instant economy the computer shows is about 15L/100. Still love it, but I know I will not ever get 1000km on a single tank ever again either.

went from my 2015 5.7 laramie w/ 3.92 s that i purchased in ohio, got 21 mpg on the 500 mile ride home, and average about 20 hwy since. I averaged, 18 city / hwy and about 15 city. towing a 2 place jet ski trailer i avg. 15 mpg since 2015..... now onto my 2022 Rebel,,,,, I was expecting a slight mpg drop but not nearly as much as i have... right now I avg. 16 hwy ,,,, 13 hwy / city and about 12 city. I did buy the rebel for the look and feel, but nearly a 5mpg avg. drop is ridiculous... how much heavier is the gen. 5 over the gen 4 ? how much would the mpg go up going with a less aggressive tire ?

They would go up quite a bit. I know a Rebel owner who got over 3 mpg by going from the stock Duratrac A/T 33" to Michelin M/S all-seasons in a 32". But it changes the look of course, you gotta pay to play when it comes to tires.

Also, Duratracs, while officially a A/T, are in reality a hybrid, in between a A/T & M/T tire. Note that the Silverado Trail Boss, which also comes with Duratracs purposely went with 32" tires just so the mpg drop wouldn't be so big compared to regular Silverados with A/T.

Yup, this is also my experience coming from an 18 Sport to my Rebel. Also I think I read somewhere the 5th gen ram has actually shaved a couple hundred pounds vs the 4th gen. Side note I just got the best highway mileage yet averaging 14.5L/100km or 16.22mpg. It was super cold, like -30c so I think there’s hope yet. Also in my experience so far the computer milage vs hand calculating consistently shows the computer off by 6-7% (computer milage worse than actual)

well thats a bit of welcome news. I put the instant mpg and the avg in the lower left and right hand corner of the gauge cluster... @ 60 mph on dead flat rd its about 15-16 mph at 70-72 ish, its actually better, at 17... 55 mph on dead flat seems to lug and make the gas mileage even worse, it appears its actually better to keep it above 70... my 15 i could ride along at 70 and hit 20 plus mpg.

Mine is sitting at 29.6 at the moment, I used to have a ‘69 Mach 1 that was better on fuel. Definitely taking it in because that’s just plain wrong.

Depending on your weather and amount of idling.. ahhh that still seems wacked. I was creeping into the 22-23 L/100 range for a week or so but it was -30 and as low as -37, warming up for 5-8 mins each start and all short <10km city trips. This week has been all above 0 and today +15 and it’s more like 17-18L/100km.
This 5th gen so far to me seems to use more fuel on start ups and idling than my 4th gen.
