When I learned its a $1000 job and the filter is incorporated with the pan, and the exhaust pipe has to be removed. WTF

If you DIY it you can save a few hundred bones, and still have the peace of mind that you've got fresh fluid in there. The filter/pan is the most expensive part of the whole job at 2-300.
