I ran. 16gauge marine 2 conductor thru the firewall today. Path using a fiberglass stick that I sharpened. Took 3 tries. Got thru on the 3rd time in the oem grommet. Silicone lube helps. Posted to show the angle. Penetration of the firewall should be parallel to the ground/frame.

I have a 10' fiberglass fish rod that I used to run wiring in homes. It works AWESOME to run wires in cars/trucks too!

Nice write up. In my car audio install days, we used these wire insertion tools. They work great because you just poke the hole with the sharp point, leave the tool stuck into the grommet and then run the wire through the tool. That way there is no tension from the rubber on the wire you are pulling through. The wire smoothly slides through the tube. It makes it easy to run the fiberglass rods through as well to get the wire started.

I just cut the end of the nipple off on the engine bay side, lubed 6" of the end of the coax I needed in the cab with Japanese knife oil and it went right thru. Had to stop and back up a couple of times as the nipple started to collapse. Granted there is not a lot of room to maneuver on either side, probably a bit more on the cab side. But the engine bay side of the coax was not something I wanted to try to solder back together.
