Hey Ford F-150 Power Stroke, not so fast…

Super Cab Power Stroke (Ford)

Earlier this week,
Ford Motor Company released the official fuel economy numbers of the
upcoming 2018 Ford F-150 3.0L Power Stroke V-6 diesel. In 4x2
configuration, equipped with it’s new 10-speed SelectShift
automatic transmission and all aluminum body; the new 2018 Ford F-150
3.0L Power Stroke V-6 diesel is the most fuel efficient full-size
pickup with official ratings of 30mpg highway, 22mpg city and 25mpg
combined.

While that might
sound awesome for the Ford F-150 team, the last generation 2018 Ram
1500 (DS) 3.0L Ecodiesel V-6 paired with its 8-speed TorqueFlite
automatic achieved 27mpg highway, 19mpg city and 22mpg combined and
is about to be replaced with a much lighter 2019 Ram 1500 (DT)
version. But, the current Ram 1500 (DS) Ecodiesel 4x4 beats the 2018
Ford F-150 Power Stroke 4x4 in the fuel economy numbers.

How can that be?
Ford fleet buyers can buy a new F-150 Power Stroke 4x4 with a 3.31
axle ratio (same as the 4x2 model), however retail buyers are stuck
with 3.55 axle ratio on their 4x4 models. This reduces the fuel
economy by 3mpg over the fleet models. The Power Stroke 4x4 retail
buyers get a 25mpg highway rating, while the 2018 Ram 1500 Ecodiesel
4x4 is rated at 27mpg highway.

But that is not the
end of the story. The new 3.0L Power Stroke V-6 makes 250 horsepower
and 440 lb.-ft of torque. The 3.0L Ecodiesel V-6 in its current form
makes 240 horsepower and 420 lb.-ft of torque. However, the Ecodiesel
is getting revamped for its debut in the 2019 Ram 1500 (DT) model.
Mike Manley (Head of Global Jeep and Ram Brands) stated at the 2018
North American International Auto Show in Detroit, that when the
Ecodiesel debuts in 2019 on the new Ram “they will reclaim all the
claims that we have”. Late last year, when Manley was on stage at
the 2017 LA Auto Show launching the 2018 Jeep Wrangler (JL) he
announced that when the Ecodiesel would debut on the Wrangler in 2019
the Ecodiesel would have 260 horsepower and 442 lb.-ft of torque.

This could be a good
lead on the future power of the upcoming 2019 Ram 1500 (DT)
Ecodiesel. With GM entering the fray with it’s new 3.0L Duramax I-6
(that’s right an inline-6 cylinder diesel) in 2019, and the power
ratings not yet released and fuel economy numbers not being released
till later this year; 2019 will be the year of the diesel half ton
pickup.

Big thanks to @redriderbob for another excellent article.

I have to say when I saw the F150 Powerstrokes numbers I was pretty surprised, I expected better in the MPG department for sure.
