Can the OEM brackets just be modified (cut) instead of having to replace them?

To be clear, you installed with the OEM brackets? Or did you replace them with the right on brackets? I’m sweating this decision. Have had bak tops and loved them. Does the beam in the center interfere with use of the bed?
