2025 Ram Laramie 1500 3.0 with 5000 miles. With front wheels off the ground my front axles rotate with the same feel when in 4wd auto as they do when in 4wd. When in 2wd they rotate freely with no feel of being engaged, I thought 4wd auto and 2wd should feel the same unless it senses loss of traction with the rears and then the fronts would engage. My gas mileage seems to be way down currently around 11.5 mpg. Am I wrong about this situation?

Sounds normal.

In 4A and 4Hi, the front axle is engaged. In 4A, the clutches may or may not be, in 4Hi the clutches will be engaged. However, they are clutches, not gears. If it were gears and mechanical linkages, when you spun the front axle, the rear wheels would also want to turn. I'll bet if the engine is running and your trans is in neutral, you'd feel a real difference.
