Hey guys,
Decided for peace of mind to change the oil. Hit 1889 miles turning into the driveway. I took the oil filter apart to see if there were any metal particles in the filter. Went with Penzoil Platnium and mobile 1 filter and won’t change again till 8k miles.

There was more shavings then I would be comfortable with in the drain pan. There were lots of minuscule metal pieces. In the oil filter there were a couple larger peices that I didn’t expect. I’m glad I changed it and well worth 60 bucks to take all the metal out of my oil and to go full synthetic.

I have to say I cannot imagine going 8k+ miles with this oil from the factory especially after break in. I know this is my opinion but just giving my thoughts. Hopefully this answers some questions for everyone.

If it makes you feel any better, I've owned many new vehicles that exhibited somewhat the same thing from all different manufacturers. It is most likely leftover metal from the various machining processes. That's the purpose of the oil filter. Most oil filters will trap anything 10 micron size or larger. I believe the Mopar 889 filter is rated to trap 8 microns.

In any event anything smaller than 10 micron debris should flow through bearing and journal areas without causing damage.

The factory oil used in Rams is a semi-synthetic.

Best regards,
Dusty

First oil change at 1,900 seems way to early. What is the recommended service interval for the "initial" oil change?

Ponypride, there is not one specifically for break in but a generic 10k/12month recommendation. The manual says to go by the oil monitoring system which I was on track for 8k miles if I went with the computer. It may sound early but the point is to get all the junk out of the oil so my hemi is happy. Oil is cheap new hemis are not.

My first oil change was done at 1000 miles for that reason. Machining and break in residuals are expected. 1000 miles is enough time to get that stuff in the filter or the bottom of the pan. It will be done again at 4000 miles (3000 miles on the oil). After that I will be on regular intervals. The cost of being OCD about the first couple of changes is about $150. I can handle that for the potential benefit that this process can have. I practice something similar on all new engines, large or small.

I did my first at 1k. Didn't notice anything in the pan, but didn't cut the filter either.

I hear thats normal in most new vechicles. Thats why you dont ride them hard at first and make the first oil change sooner than later.

Completely agree with your conclusion. Everyone has their own opinion but generally hope this type of findings would help people to not rely on the computer. Your car/truck computer does not sample oil, it simple use idle/drive time and time in general to calculate oil life.

I would make an appointment next week. Oil is the blood of an engine and there is nothing worse then old dirty/metalish oil.

That’s pretty normal.

honestly, its very hard to tell what's trapped in that filter media (metal shavings), and even hard to identify what's in the bottom of your drain pain.

Yep. Working as designed. I will go by the computer and change the oil when it tells me to. If it needed to be done sooner, I guarantee FCA would be all over that to avoid liability.
They only need the engine to last 5yr/60k. That's very different than my expectations. Keep in mind they are pressured by environmentalist to extend oil change intervals as well. They don't have my motors longevity in mind either.

I changed mine at 2910 miles. 2500 was my goal. Next one will be at 6k, then 10k, then every 5k unless I decide to go full synthetic....then I'd stretch it to 8k.

I used to go 3K with dead dinosaurs in the crank case, then extended the range when full synthetic became more popular. My last vehicle managed to have a manufacturer service interval of 10K miles/1 year with a higher revving twin-turbo V6.

Whatever you guys need to do that helps you sleep at night, go for it. There is no single answer that makes everyone happy.

If all of this metal shaving talk is correct, it seems to me that a transmission, transfer case and read end would all wear out prematurely due to this problem. But they don't.

Didn’t cut filter out. I had the same nasty stuff come out of pan. My piece of mind just happy that’s out of engine. Everyone is free to their opinion and preferences.
