Fender supports? WTF is this dumb *** thing?

I installed a second battery in my 5th gen and had to remove the "fender support" bar. It was the first time I took a real look at what its actually connected to.

It's connected to this tiny *** thin piece of sheet metal sticking out of the firewall. WTF is this dumb *** thing? 10lbs of force can bent this flange piece. What good does this "support" bar actually do?

Does anyone have a 'strut tower bar' style support bar that I can get? Maybe with a better mounting bracket? This thing looks good but I can't imagine it does anything useful.

I think it's just to keep the fender from flapping at speed. It wasn't designed to be a support.
