Just closed on a 21 limited night edition today and will be taking delivery tomorrow.
Dealer is trying to sell me on an extended warranty. Specifically from mastertech.

With all the tech in this truck I think there is a pretty good chance Something is going to go wrong in the next 5 years. So I am seriously thinking about buying an extended warranty that covers electronics.

Thoughts/suggestions? Should I go with a mopar warranty or another company? What are the benefits/drawbacks of mopar vs a third party such as mastertech?

Should I buy the warranty from the dealer or a third party?

I did search for this topic and saw some threads but they were all down in the weeds. Figured I would ask again to see if I can get some more general guidance concerning which warranties are good and which are junk. And where I should buy.

Thanks in advance.

You’ll get many opinions on this subject but I think everyone here will agree on the fact that you should always get a MOPAR FCA extended warranty, never a third party warranty (which is what the dealerships sell and make big $$$ off of.)

The two best places to purchase these warranties are typically Zeigler and Chrysler Warranty Direct. Both are FCA warranties. Both of these companies typically have the lowest prices. However, keep in mind these are not really true “warranties” as much as they are “service contracts” since your true warranty will have expired before these kick in. They also don’t typically cover absolutely everything the factory bumper to bumper warranty covered, so just FYI.

It’s also important to remember that the price of the extended warranty will continue going up the longer you wait and approach your 3yr/36000 bumper to bumper factory warranty expiration. For example, once you pass 12000 miles the extended warranty will go up $300... another $300 past 24000 miles, and finally another $300 at 36,000 miles. So many folks buy them early.

Also remember that the extended warranty is always based on the purchase date of the truck, not the expiration of your factory warranty. So that means that if you buy an 8 year/85000 mile extended warranty, you’re really just getting a 5 year/49000 mile extended warranty because your factory bumper to bumper warranty is good for 3 years/36000 miles. At that point the extended warranty will take over but it’s really already been in effect since the date you bought the truck, in effect, “overlapping” the factory warranty.

I flip flopped back and forth on buying the extended warranty (I have a 2019 Bighorn with 15,000 miles so I’m still under my factory warranty.) I actually bought the 8/85 from Zeigler at 11500 miles for $1530 TWICE and got a refund TWICE, simply because in the end I couldn’t stand the thought of paying over $1500 for an extended warranty that wouldn’t even take effect for a couple more years. During those two years I have way better ways to save/invest that $1500 instead of it just sitting there not netting me any value whatsoever. Once I approach the expiration of my factory warranty I may re-evaluate but at this point the money I could have spent on an extended warranty has been killing it in the stock market so if the truck does well up to 36000 miles I just may not even buy one.

Also don’t forget that you have a 5 year 60000 mile factory powertrain warranty well after the 3/36 factory warranty expires.

Extended warranties have one purpose, and that is to net the manufacturers a nice profit. They have calculated the odds with a fine tooth comb and those odds statistically benefit the manufacturer, not the buyer. Even though some of these warranties end up paying for themselves in the form of one or two big repairs, statistically it is usually the other way around, much like ”the house” in Vegas. I am banking on nothing major going wrong with my truck through good maintenance and lots of TLC, and choosing to invest my money in what I feel is a much wiser way. But to each their own. Buying an extended warranty is neither a right or wrong choice, it’s a personal choice based on your character and peace of mind. Good luck and if you do choose to buy one, DONT BUY A 3RD PARTY! Look on these sites instead. Zeigler also offers a pretty nice $300ish discount if you use the promo code “payinfull.” Good luck!

I went with a CNA warranty through the dealership. No regrets, but also haven’t needed to use it. I got it financed for 0% with the truck so I’m happy.

In short, extended warranties are just another form of insurance. Only the buyer can determine what gives them piece of mind.

Like you, I was going to “wait and see” about getting an extended warranty on my 2019. Then FCA forced my hand by discontinuing the Lifetime MaxCare warranty...so I purchased one while I could. Will I have the truck long enough for it to pay off? Time will tell.

Zeigler has a discount code, "PAYINFULL" I think it is. I have not bought a warranty but have read on here to use the code for an extra several hundred $$$ off.

I bought a 100k bumper to bumper third party warranty at dealer cost for $1200.

I believe you will deal with the extra warranty so little I don’t mind a little more haggle to save $2k as everything’s still covered to replicate factory.

Hello all -

I haven't bought a car before until a few weeks ago and am pretty sure I got suckered into buying an extended warranty at the dealership (Powertrain Warranty for 5-years/60k miles) for a whopping amount. I can cancel the warranty with a small cancellation fee, which is what I am thinking of doing.

Do you guys know if I would still have the factory warranty for 3 years/36k? I've also been reading here about the Zeigler warranties and they seem reasonably priced. Could I buy one of those after canceling the one from my dealership? And yes, I think with the cancelation fee and purchasing the Ziegler deal I would still come out ahead.......

My finance guy at the dealership isn't very helpful in helping me understand (and I'm also an idiot!).

Thanks!

Yes you will still have your factory bumper to bumper and power train warranty. You won’t lose any of them. You can also cancel your current extended warranty and get the Ziegler one without issues. Should be a simple process!

What did you pay for your extended warranty??
