Expanded in floor storage?

Hey all

When I was running my wire loom for my bed lights i was intrigued by the in floor storage bins. Looking at them from under the truck it appears (to me) there could be room for a larger bin potentially. Not MASSIVELY larger but certainly a few inches wider and deeper, and several inches longer.
Not asserting that the opening be larger per se, but some extra space there COULD be nice. Especially for those without ram boxes AND for those that can't access rear underseat storage easily due to multiple car seats!

Wondering if anyone has seen anything like this or explored doing something like this? I've search here and online not finding much other than locking kids and adding infloor storage if you didn't originally have it.

TIA

I'm kicking around the idea of putting subs down there...biggest challenge is designing an interface for the underside of floor.

I believe the Lockerdown safe is slightly bigger than the OEM plastic stuff.. but I believe they went out of business.

I've been thinking about popping it out and expanding it.. I have a welder and my buddy has a plasma table and other metal fab tools. Though IIRC it installs from the inside, through the floor..

Can't say your wrong about that company.

All i know is all the options out there ive seen currently dont seem to be any sort of expansion. Just locking lids.

As far as it installing from inside I believe that's correct. And I believe it's some type of plastic or composite not metal. But that's not to say you couldn't make one from metal.
I guess I just find it interesting there's a ton of aftermarket companies that do plastic molding from wheel well liners to rear under seat storage trays. I don't see how a larger in floor storage would be much different.

I'm sure there's something I'm overlooking and over simplifying it.

They do install from the top. So, what if you fabricated the larger bin with a detachable top lip? You could install the bin from underneath and screw the top lip from inside. So, it would now be a 2 piece install rather than a 1 piece from the top only install. I mean, since you're fabricating anyway.....

I assume one would have to do it this way. A bigger opening / lid is a whole different can of worms!

Next time I get a chance to duck under the truck I'll take a few pictures and measurements.

Width between the frame rail and outside body trim being likely the smallest gain.

If depth matched the bottom of the frame rail a bracket could be maybe be devised for added support.

Off the top of my head I forget limitations forward and rear of the in floor box, I seem to recall there being something fairly close to the rear of it. Regardless biggest gain would likely be length. At least a few inches both directions.

So if one were to make it a bit wider, a bit deeper, and decently longer. Two piece design to attach at the top and probably some sort of small attachment point at the bottom front and rear to the frame rail for added support. Sounds like an overall decent idea to me!
