I'm new to Ram (always had a GM) and to the forum but after a little time it seems like there is a lot of knowledge here. I'm hoping someone can help me out. I've got a 2019 1500 with the 5.7 and 14,500 miles. Yesterday out of nowhere it started knocking pretty bad. I know that there is a little knock for a few seconds at start up but this was knocking when warm and louder than anything I've ever heard before. Definitely doesn't sound normal. To say I'm not impressed is an understatement. I'm taking it to the dealer today but it seems to have quieted down after being loud all day yesterday. I'd love to get some feedback on what would cause such a knock. My first guess is a lifter issue maybe? Took this video of the noise.

Of course I brought it to the dealership today and it's quiet again. Any ideas anyone? Thank you

It could be a lifter issue or possibly an manifold crack, both of which are known to happen with past hemi trucks. Hopefully a dealer visit will confirm which one.

Dropped it off at the dealership. Of course the sound seems to have gone away now and I couldn't reproduce it. Fortunately I took a video and the noise is very obvious in the video. Hopefully they find something. Guess we will see.

Just asking...have you tried another tank of fuel just to rule out that? Maybe top off what you have with premium?

It only did it for two days and that was running the recommended octane. Of course the sound went away when the dealer got it.

Intermittent problems are the worst to diagnose, but I don't believe the noise I hear from your video is connected in anyway to fuel. Did you notice what the oil pressure was?

I'd be sure to get this on record with your dealer, and if it does it again I'd take it back immediately to make sure someone hears it.

Well the dealer called today and said that it sounds fine and they cant really look into it further unless there is a noise. I did email them the video of the noise and they told me the technician would listen to it. I'm not surprised it went away, that's why i took the video. I've loved my Ram to this point but I am now questioning my decision to buy it. I keep my vehicles for years, last truck had 200k miles, and long term reliability is a concern to me now. No engine in proper running order would knock like that. All I can think about is the noise coming back at 5yr 1 day or 60,001 miles.

Yes as soon as I heard it I shut it off, checked the oil, and then on the drive home monitored the oil pressure. All was normal. It is on record now they say. I would have taken it in immediately but unfortunately the dealer is "very busy" and getting anyone to look at something without an appointment seems pretty difficult. Next time I'll be driving straight there and hopefully someone will come out.

I have a 2019 Classic with the 5.7. I’ve taken it to my dealer twice, and written Ram twice about the engine knock. Basically been told I’m crazy it’s normal. I’ve checked oil frequently, changed oil, changed brands of oil, changed filters and brands of filters, nothing makes it better. Needless to say I’m very pissed off. I’m retired in fixed income and can’t afford another truck. I’ve worked on vehicles my entire life, built engines from the block up, was a crew chief on a race team, I know when something isn’t right, and this isn’t even close to right. Hell it knocks more than a diesel !! My next step I guess is my states consumer agency and get it declared a lemon. I’m beyond frustrated and done with it. Sure makes me not want to buy another Ram.

Hello @OldVet, thanks for sharing this concern you are experiencing with your Ram. We can definitely understand how this would be frustrating. We recommend scheduling a follow up appointment with your dealer in order to ensure that all resources are exhausted when determining the cause of this concern. If needed, our team would be happy to escalate a case on your behalf. Please let us know if you would like to be connected to a specialist during your future appointment for additional support.

With the engine knock , mine had that when I first went to test drive it .
it was sitting on the dealers lot for about 9 months before I bought it . Anyway I took it for a 3 hour test drive and by the time I got back it was as quiet as ever and it’s never done it again .
I have no idea why but have you had your battery tested ?
I realize that it doesn’t make any sense but it’s cheap to have your battery tested .

That's not engine knock - real engine knock sounds like someone is taking a hammer to the block at engine RPM. What you video'd sounds really slow - so probably valvetrain noise... not really concerning if it goes away.

Winter Blend Gas possibly or run 89octane all my noises went away with 89

So an update.
I’ve tried three different oil/filter combos but with no results. It does seem like a cam or lifter issue.
Tried running 89 fuel, no help in noise. Tried running several tanks of 91 fuel, no help.
Ram customer service says “that’s the way the motors are made and sound”. I say BS.
So at this point I guess I go to my states consumer dept to get assistance. This entire thing really pisses me off.
