Can someone educate me as to what the part is that sits right next to battery. Previous truck didn’t have one.

That is the Powertrain Control Module. 19 bighorn 10K miles. PCM replaced.

As already noted, it is the Power Train Control module.

Assuming your previous truck was a 4th gen (DS), the PCM was mounted on the right side (passenger side) of the firewall, engine side.

Thanks. My last truck was a 2011 Tacoma. Didn’t have any fancy things
 
I have read that some of the older Tacomas' equivalent to PCM (they called it a ECM, I believe) is behind the dash on the passenger side, inside the cabin. Your 2011 may have been similar, in which case you never would have saw it, most likely.
