Driving in Neutral

I have a 2023 limited 1500. Occasionally I take my truck through a conveyor car wash. Most of the time I put it in neutral when my front tires hit the conveyor like you’re supposed to and off I go with no issues. However, about one out of 10 times I will put the truck in neutral when the front tires hit the conveyor and yet the truck keeps moving forward until all four tires are on the conveyor. This resulted in me rear ending somebody once. I am 100% sure the truck is in neutral but yet it creeps forward while I’m the conveyor until all four tires are on. I don’t understand how this happens if I’m truly in neutral.

Perhaps Newton's first law. "An object in motion stays in motion with the same speed and in the same direction unless acted upon by an unbalanced force."

Exactly. It isn't in park so, it's free to move.

You might be creeping in neutral. Go find an empty flat parking lot and see.

Otherwise, what's probably happening is that you pull on and the ear on the drive belt hits your tire and since you have low rolling resistance, you lurch forward, and then the ear catches up with the front tire and away you go. Just wait an extra couple seconds after the light turns green to buy some extra space ahead of you

Thanks. Yes I always leave a car space ahead of me now. I’ve tried replicating on a lot but can’t. I have a video of it happening as I requested it from the car wash. I’ll see if I can upload it to YouTube and link it

Here is the video. You can see my tires briefly stop when I hit the belt and go into neutral. Then, I’m getting pushed forward on the belt as you can see my tires are rolling over the rubber belt stoppers. This incident is more subtle than previous ones as sometimes I go forward like the truck is in drive and I’m giving it gas

I don't see the tires pushing you forward. I see the belt pulling you forward. Unless there is a delay in the shift into neutral, it's not going to be engaged.

You can see where not only is the belt dragging me, I’m also moving as I’m going over the rubber stoppers on the belt. Normally, the front tires stay where they are on the belt and the back tires just role. My front tires stay within the bumpers on the belt when neutral is properly engaged.

I don't see it.

This only happens in the car wash, can you get it to drive while in N any other time?

I haven’t been able to replicate it elsewhere yet. But, I’ll have to try a bit more now as this has me gun shy to use the wash again.

I always stay in the. Rakes, even after ahiftingni to neutral, until I feel the conveyor pulling me, and know for sure the truck is not still rolling in it's own. And I always leave a large gap between me and the car in front of me. Sometimes it upsets the wash attendant trying to push cars through faster, but it's safer.

I have felt what you are experiencing and it's just momentum of the truck as you were rolling forward to get into the conveyor.

The video does not appear as if your rear wheels are pushing you. It looks like your forward momentum and the momentum of the belt just kept you moving forward until both wheels came against the raised ribs on the belt to stop your forward momentum.

Definitely came into the wash too fast and didn't wait to release brakes until your forward momentum had stopped, and conveyor took over

You can see right when my front wheels hit the belt I come to a complete stop and put in neutral. Everything else after that is the truck driving forward while in neutral. There is no momentum as I can to a complete stop. I can see how it looks like I came in fast but that is all while in neutral.

I don't see where truck ever came to a complete stop. Front wheels stopped rolling right on topmkf one of ribs, but the truck itself never dropped. When you released brakes, truck was still moving and came down off the rib and momentum carried it forward.

Here is the video where i hit the person in front of me. Again, you can see right when my front tires hit the belt, i go into neutral, then there is definite power behind the truck as momentum could not do that.
