do I really need diff drop kit if using leveling shocks?

don't have a truck yet, just investigating options for further medium lift

some say I'll need diff drop kit if using leveling shocks. Is it true?

No. you can use leveling struts up to 2.8" or so without any drama. The drop diff comes with 4-6" lift kits.
