Do I have to carry the key everywhere?

Hello everyone,,
I recently switched to a 2019 longhorn from my Ford F-150.
One feature that I loved on the F-150 is the keypad on the exterior of the door. It allowed me to keep the key inside the car at all times and unlock and lock the doors from the keypad. I do lots of hiking and kayaking in remote areas and it is nice to not have to worry about carrying a car key with me.

I do not see a keypad on my Dodge. Am I required to bring the key everywhere I go? Or can I keep the key inside and lock and unlock the doors without having my key on me?

Yeah I had the proximity entry handles on my ‘18 Laramie and I had the same thought as you, but if I remember correctly, if the keys were in my console you couldn’t even lock the truck from the handle.

I wish these trucks had the keypad as well, it's a nice feature.

You could always get a hide-a-key to keep the key on the truck. Would still need it to lock/unlock doors

A solution would be to use the siriusxm guardian app, which requires a subscription after the 1 year trial runs out. I've seen where people have gotten it about half of the $25 a month list price.

You could, but then you'd also probably want a faraday pouch or equivalent, put the key inside that first, and then put it/pouch into the hide-a-key.

Why would you do that? OP already said he used to leave the key inside his old Ford. So no real difference.

If the fob isn't in the faraday pouch, it's in the cab, so 1) Things stay active and run down the battery and 2) Anyone with a slimjim or a rock can get in, start it, and drive away.

+1. Also, there are guys that have scanners for keyfobs to pick up the signals and boost them, use them to get into vehicles or drive away with them. No need to make it easy for them.

Short answer is yes. Unless you want to use a “hide a key” solution. Do you carry a cellphone/plb when hiking/kayaking? If so, place your key in the same bag you put the cellphone. Nature option: find a hiding place nearby your truck under a rock, etc. where nobody will look.
Another option, take the key out of the fob, place on a wrist bracelet or whatever else you are comfortable with and leave the fob in the truck.

They will send you an offer after expiration for 6 months/$60.

Now everyone on the internet knows that if you come across a Ford parked in a remote area, there's a good chance that the fob will be inside. :ROFLMAO:

I honestly don't know why it's a big deal to have the key/fob on you. I always have mine with me. When I kayak I bring a dry box for things like my keys, wallet, and phone. When I'm hiking I keep those things either in a pack or just keep them in my pocket. I wouldn't keep my key anywhere on or in my vehicle if I'm leaving it in a remote spot for any length of time.

Threads like this kind of make me miss the days when there were no fobs, and you locked, unlocked, and started your car with the actual key LOL.

I used to have a Ford Explorer with the keypad. I would do the same thing with leaving the key in truck. What sucked, was when I’d leave a light on or something and my battery died! Keys locked in vehicle PLUS dead battery ! Mind you, this was a 1999 Ford Explorer. They may have added battery backup by now.

So many Ford (and other cars) trucks get stolen because people leave the fob inside and its easy to clone it. 80% of the vehicles made today are susceptible to cloning. Its really not that big a deal to carry the key. A cell phone is much bigger to lug around than a fob. I always thought the keypad on the doors looks tacky.
