Read in another group that some people clean their DEF injector as regular maintenance (at same time as oil change). This is done by blowing steam on it or brushing it with a toothbrush.

Any one else do this?

all these DEF injector hoopla got me paranoid so at around 30+k miles, i was changing my fuel filter & decided to take a look at my DEF injector since i was already down there. at 30+k miles using 90% Walmart DEF, 10% truck stop DEF my injectors look like this

steam cleaned it & also used a soft toothbrush, then reinstalled.

I'm at almost 60k miles now, no plans of going in there again until after 100k, or if warning pops.

wear eye protection, you will get DEF crumbs, dirt & water spray on your face & eyes.

Ill be under my truck Saturday for an Oil change. Ive never looked at the DEF injector, maybe ill take a peak and also clean it. Im at 67k miles. I don't have a handy steam cleaner though, any other safe methods for cleaning this?

I'm new to the diesel engine & def systems so I'm learning as i go also. but in theory, water in spray bottle & soft toothbrush to clean/dissolve the crust should work since DEF is water soluble. might take a while to desolve the crust without steam, but it should work. don't use any soap since it's almost impossible to completely rinse the soap out of the orifice where the injector goes in.

I'll take a look at mine but with my Mopar 125,000 mile warranty and no mention of this in the owners manual, I'm going to ignore it for now and wait for an EVAP or emission error to pop up and let the dealer do it and bill RAM.

You should run Platinum DEF for the next 30K and see if it makes any difference. How easy/difficult is it to remove the injector? Haven't seen anyone talk about doing it.

it's easy to remove & reinstall. it's 1 C-clamp with 1 bolt. the whole evolution took me 10 to 15 min. i don't mind cleaning the injector when i reach 100k miles.

someone ran platinum def on their truck for 30k miles & said there were no def crust/residue on the injectors.

Interesting. I'd be a bit more worried about build-up inside the pipe & SCR, which I don't think you'll be able to clean out easily, so for me, I'll just keep running Platinum and hope it works as advertised.

I've only used BlueDEF Platinum in my truck. Yes, more pricey, but I don't really pay for it, it goes into my expenses.

Using these pictures as a baseline, I'll see what mine looks like when I reach this mileage. I know there's a lot of debate in using the Platinum over any other.

Adding to this that the bolt is a 4mm allen. Mine was installed with the bolt at the top and I couldn't find what type of fitting it was...tried a million things until I put a mirror up there and figured it out. Rotated the bolt to the rear on reinstall.

This is at 50k with all cheap and truck stop Def. I probably wouldn't have bothered had I known. Won't touch it again for a long time. GDE tuned since around 25k.

Mine doesn’t look too bad for 82k but the inside of the DPF didn’t look great. Really hard to see in there. IMG_6425.jpeg IMG_6427.jpeg

Cleaned the DEF injector today. Here are before and after pics of the inlet port. I forgot to take a picture of the injector but it wasn’t bad at all.

Easy process. Toothbrush and steam.
