Cylinder Misfire and Potential Blown Head Gasket, Dealership Repair Question

2019 Ram 1500 4wd. 59,700miles on it.

Had check engine light come on while sitting at idle 3 different times. Light would eventually turn off. Pulled the codes each time and it was Cylinder 8 misfire (P0308). Took it to the dealership and they say they see the cylinder 8 misfire and there is a small misfire as well on 3 and 4. There is small coolant leak in cylinder 8 and they think it is a blown head gasket. They said to get in there and replace the gasket will be $5,000. If it turns out to be cam/lifters it will be about $5,200.

I’m just super lost on what to do. Should I take it to another shop for diagnosis? Not sure where even does that type of work. Or should I sell it without the work done and just get a new truck? It is fully paid off though. Any advice is appreciated. Going to talk to them later today about next steps.

Thats a tough one.... If it were me and I had to pay for the repair out of pocket I would trade it in,, they will more than likely send it to a auction afterwards. You owe no money on it so you'll have a nice trade in down payment and can take the 5k for repairs and roll that into a new one also

Definitely wont hurt to have another shop check it out, If they give you similar results then you know its more than likely that.

Only other option you could do is test it yourself, They make a liquid you put into your coolant and it will detect combustion if you do happen to have a bad head gasket. If that comes back positive then you are back to square one to do the repair or trade it in

Can they provide a picture of coolant in the cylinder? A coolant caused misfire is usually a cold start symptom, will misfire a few seconds then stop. 5k seems high for head gaskets on a Hemi. I would recommend taking to a reputable independent shop and get a second opinion, do not tell them what you have been told already(or do many independent shops want to one up the dealer).

Personally, if you have the money for the repair, I would go that route. Unless you are just looking for an excuse to get a new truck it will cost you far more than $5k for a new truck. And having a paid off vehicle is far nicer than having to make payments again.

As for diagnosis, seems odd it would be a head gasket. Not something Hemis are really prone to. Not saying it isn't either. You could take an oil sample and send it in for a used oil analysis, and it will tell you for sure if it's head gasket or cam)lifters. There would be trace amounts of coolant in oil if it's head gasket. And high wear metals if it was cam/lifter.

if you plan to keep the truck and you really like it get it fixed
and you can also remove the cylinder deactivation, the 8 to 4.
