I am very anal about changing oil every 3000 miles. It’s just what a have always done because of towing and basically being hard on the engine. I run the truck often so I probably charge oil every 3 months. I have tried the bag over the filter trick it didn’t work for me. I always end up wearing a lot of oil. So my question is does anyone ever puncture the filter housing to drain the filter first. I never really had an issue when we had car lift but doing it on the garage floor is a bit tricky.

your best bet because you change the oil so much is this;

 
Trans dapt also makes a good product. I ran them on a number of vehicle for many years and no issues with them.
 
I bought an oil udder xl on Amazon. Cracked the filter loose with nylon strap wrench, then snuck the oil udder up around/under the filter and spun it enough to where the oil started coming out. I added a small length of tube to the udder so it would drain right into my pan. I let it drain for a few minutes, then unscrewed it the rest of the way and pulled filter (still attached to the oil udder with the magnet inside). Didn't spill a drop. It's a tight space to work in and if the previous oil changer hadn't used an impact wrench to install the last filter, it would have gone soo much smoother with less cussing. Next time I'm replacing the drain plug with a fumoto valve to make it even easier the time after that.
 
I puncture the filter. It helps a lot but don’t expect it keep everything **** and span. I attach some tubing to a funnel and run it to a small reservoir. Funnel under the filter and let er rip
 
don't see why so many people complain. i just use a rag and some break kleen

Thanks for bringing this up. I change my own oil and curse the engineers every time. The oil drains into a cross member and you need to be a contortionist to reach and turn the filter. Im happy to see there are solutions.
 
your best bet because you change the oil so much is this;

My truck is being replaced in another 2.5 yrs, and if I end up with a Hemi and the oil filter location remains as it is now (5th gen), I’m purchasing this oil filter relocator kit hands down!!
 
I just changed mine in my 22 limited. I bought an oil udder XL, and besides the lousy filter placement that makes getting a filter wrench on it difficult, once I was able to crack it free, I used the oil udder and didn't spill a single drop of oil on the truck. I used a flexible funnel under the drain plug to keep the oil off the front sway bar as well. Next time I'll be installing a fumoto valve.
 
No oil change has been done to my 2021 Laramie Hemi that I didn't do. I've done every one. At first, I worried about spilling oil out of the filter upon removal. After trying a few different things to mitigate the spillage, I finally gave up. Now, I get the drive train up to full operating temps. Pull the truck into working position in the garage, assemble the tools, and wait until the engine is not blazing hot. Then drain the engine into a bucket. Then remove the filter and let it drain. I make no attempt to keep old oil off the truck. When I'm done, I wipe up all I can see. Job done.
 
I just changed mine (22 limited) using an oil udder XL, didn't spill a drop on the ground or anywhere on the truck. Worst part was removing the old filter. I used a flexible funnel to drain the oil so nothing got on the sway bar either. I used 5w30 PUP and Mo339 filter. Will change again at or before more 5k miles.

I love my Pacbrake relocated. Pacbrake is the best, very high quality kit.
If you are changing oil that often, you should Definately have a Pacbrake relocator and a Fumoto valve.

The bag works great, just use two bags, I would use a half half gallon or 1 gallon zip locks.

Break the seal with a half turn, then slide on the 1st bag all the way until you get to the bottom of the bag, than start turning until the oil starts coming out. Then wait about 15 seconds until it stops dripping.

Slide off that 1st bag (into a waiting plastic pan on your side), and slip on the 2nd bag. Now finish unscrewing. Once it's unscrewed, residual oil will fall out of the mount opening for about 2-3 seconds, hold the bag until you get that last bit of oil to drop out. Then slide out that 2nd bag. With this method, I don't drop any oil or get dirty, honestly one of the cleanest oil filter changes out of all the vehicles I've owned.

As for 3K, with hard driving all the time, I would do the same thing.
