Bye!!

I do not really have an answer. Just curious about somethings.

First thing. It always interests me why 5th gear towing sets people off. Not just the OP...but I have seen this numerous times. 8th and 7th are overdrive gears. 6th is 1 to 1...so 5th is the first gear actually helping the truck. I would never want to be in anything over it.

2nd thing. What were the other RAM trucks you used?

3rd. More info about the truck you have. Crew/quad. 4x4 or 4x2. Trim...etc.

Sounds normal to me...

I don’t have the same truck, but I have zero issues towing my v-nose 17x7 tandem axle enclosed trailer with my rebel ecodiesel.

3.21 gears aren’t the best for towing, most opt for the 3.92 for towing enclosed trailers or campers. Other than that there’s not much you can do, the hemi has lots of power but like all gasoline engines it needs to rev pretty high to get into the power band.

Could the trailer potentially have issues with the brakes dragging? Or some other sort of drag cause by a mechanical issue?

Well since it was brought up.....

What the heck were you thinking buying a truck to do truck stuff with soccer mom, grocery getter gears? Seriously?

Did you do any other mods? With the stock car tires that come on these things the 3:21 will get it up a slight grade in 7th but don't expect much more. 3:21s are only justified by people that bought them and don't want to admit it was a poor choice.

I am glad you see the error of your ways. Now go out and find some schmuck that believes a 3:21 ratio will be the golden goose of gas milage and do a trade.

I am not sure what the issue could be, other than gear ratio and expectations. I tow a 28' travel trailer weighing ~7,000 lbs loaded and have no issues. Main difference is that I have the 3.92 gears. My truck will stay in 5th (maybe 6th gear @ times) and gets about 9-10mpg when towing flat or 3-4mpg if on an incline. What you are experiencing seems typical with the 3.21 gears.

Wasn't looking for ****** bag replies!! Thought only Ford guys were jerks!!

You knew you towed trailers and You bought a truck with 3.21 gears… what did you expect?

You can’t change the gear set in the front diff, you have to buy an entire diff, you can change the gears in the rear

Or trade the truck in with towing gears.

That escalated quickly.

I was hoping to see what he was comparing it too atleast.

A guy on ramforum. Wanted to know why his 04 Hemi had to tow in 3rd and only gets 11 mpg. (3rd and 5th are the same between the genrations)

I told him the sane thing...atleast he did not leave.

Wow, what a thread! Lol

It’s funny that the guy deleted his original post. I just read it and moved on since it seemed like he really just wanted a pity party- you know, misery loves company and all that.
