Sharing this to hopefully help others with a similar issue!

I was experiencing significant rattling from my running boards. I bought my 2020 Rebel used, and whoever installed them did not follow the instructions correctly and remove the paint from the factory installed studs. As a result, I had three broken studs on the driver side (one at each mount point) and one broken on the passenger side.IMG_2553.jpeg

The studs are pressed in/welded in from the other side in the factory, so there is not a good way to remove them. You can tell from my artistic rendering how they’re supposed to be.
My solution was to drill through them, thread the hole and install a new bolt. The little bit circled in red is what I threaded.

Due to space constraints, I needed to buy a right angle drill, but if yours is short enough, it may work. I then center punched each broken stud, and drilled through them with progressively larger bits (1/8, 1/4 and 5/16). I followed that with a 3/8-16 thread tap. Once all the holes were threaded, I put in some 3/4in long grade 8 bolts, with a flat washer and crush washer. I didn’t go crazy tightening them because there is only 3/8in or so of thread and I didn’t want to strip it out, but it is strong enough to silence the rattle I was experiencing. IMG_2692.jpeg

Hope this helps someone!

Cool, thank you for the post.

Considering the torque rating for the running board bolts is only 15 ft-lbs, makes perfect sent they would be easy to break if you try over-torque them down because you didn't remove the paint.
