How did you approach your first 5k miles? Oil changes - revs- average muscle- etc

Thx!

Absolutely love this thing

I didn’t drive it any differently. I don’t beat on my vehicles anyway and it’s not a sports car so I didn’t worry about it. I think modern vehicles don’t have a break in period like the older vehicles. I changed my oil after 4K but there are those that will do it after the first 1k or so. Personal preference.

Make sure you go file for this additional rebate. Seems like they have been having problems with vin numbers being in the system so you have to call them so they send you the actual app. Do it within 60 days of purchase. Many of us have already received our checks. No strings attached.

The only qualification is that “someone in your household” must have a non-FCA vehicle.

Just changed the oil for the first time on mine when it had a touch over 6k miles. Prior to that I towed with it and got on it from time to time. Didn't drive it any differently than I would have one with 50k miles on it.

I was making WOT pulls in my Camaro shortly after firing my new engine FYI. Let it eat!

I drove it with variable speeds mixed local and short highway trip for first 1000 miles. After that, started romping on it up to 70 getting on freeway a few times a month. Changed oil at 4000 miles with Pennzoil conventional oil and Mobil 1 filter to allow more break in and then at 6000 miles I will begin using Pennzoil Ultra Platinum full synthetic and Mobil 1 filters from then on, changing at 5k-6k mile intervals. I figured that way rings are well broken in before synthetic switch. I have a Magnaflow cat back and I plan on occasional hard throttle run as 1) fun 2) exhaust sounds great 3) keeps engine used to some performance requests. You can't really hurt it as the computer will never allow too high of RPMs. If you eventually have full synthetic oil and premium filter, an occasional "drive it like you stole it" can't hurt. It's got 400 horses that need to be exercised.

The owners manual says the following about break-in:

“ENGINE BREAK-IN RECOMMENDATIONS A long break-in period is not required for the engine and drivetrain (transmission and axle) in your vehicle. Drive moderately during the first 300 miles (500 km). After the initial 60 miles (100 km), speeds up to 50 or 55 mph (80 or 90 km/h) are desirable. While cruising, brief full-throttle acceleration within the limits of local traffic laws contributes to a good break-in. Wide-open throttle acceleration in low gear can be detrimental and should be avoided. The engine oil installed in the engine at the factory is a high-quality energy conserving type lubricant. Oil changes should be consistent with anticipated climate conditions under which vehicle operations will occur.”

But to each his own.

I don't think a whole lot about it these days. Engine tolerances today are so much tighter, and lubricants so much better, that I don't think it really makes a whole lot of difference. You'd only really know in hindsight anyway, and you'd have to have a control group that drove a certain way while others drove differently, then break all the engines down at a certain mileage and see how the wear patterns differed. There's really just too many variables to do any kind of realistic testing. Don't drive like a maniac and don't drive like a grandma. At least until you have several thousand miles on the engine :)

I had a friend that always was hard on vehicles. When he was young, he bought a brand new 1982 Chev S10 pickup with 2.8 v6 engine and drove it super hard from the day he got it from dealer lot with hard acceleration all the time revving it high. That truck was very fast as it seemed to respond to the abuse and get used to it. It lasted and didn't break for the few years he had it, and 2.8's had crappy oil pickup issues by design. They were also in Jeep Cherokees and starving for oil on off road tilted hill climbing conditions. Didn't work very well in Jeeps.

This is really a non concern. Just get on it a bit to seat everything. Then change your oil. This debate has been exhausted
