Man, I hate to see that. What a horrible thing to happen.
Back in the summer of 1999 (I think), I was at Oshkosh and watched a pair of F4-U Corsairs collide with a Bearcat during a formation takeoff. Being taildraggers, they couldn’t see in front of them. Watched them explode into a ball of flames, in front of 60,000 people. It was terrible to see.
I was actually at the show eating lunch in the hangar next to FiFi who was readying to takeoff. We were eating with a bunch of the CAF ground crew, pilots and family when that happened. Seeing their reaction made this much, much, worse than if we had been in the crowd. One of the family members collapsed while screaming "no" over and over. It was heartbreaking and a gutpunch and I did not even know any of the six men who died.
