Are the factory mid-level LED bulbs replaceable?

You can open up the assembly then you have to re-seal them. Owner manual says take to dealer.

any idea whats in there ? The bulb looks like it projects up from the bottom of the housing into the reflector area. Doesn't look to be standard headlight bulb.

It is a standard LED reflector, not a projector. You are correct, the bulb is aimed up from the bottom of the housing into a reflector which directs the light outward.
