Looked for old posts on my problem and really can’t say I found anything dedicated to it. Some kind of do, but go all over the place with other topics added.

Have a 2020 Limited, 5.7, 8 speed, 3:21, crew cab, and 4X4. 3,737 miles on odometer. New in March. Ever since new, when coming to a stop, the transmission “bumps” going from 2nd to 1st about 80% of the time. Sometimes it worse than other times. I’m speaking - noticeable “bump”. Told dealership about it not to long after purchasing and been back to dealership twice since. Second time had salesman and transmission guy ride and drive. Both said that they could feel ”THE BUMP” when coming to a stop - slow stop, like I drive. Transmission guy said he’d order valve body to install and call when in. Week later, got call and appointment made. Limited went in Monday @ 8:00 am and waited for two hour job to get done. After five hours, service guy came and said they wouldn’t be done today and would like to keep overnight. OKAY. Next day, got two calls telling me not done and working with higher ups to program computer. Not putting in valve in they said. Want to keep overnight again. OKAY. Third day they called at noon - done. All they did was programming for 2 1/2 days! Took it for test drive, still did the same “bump” when stopping. Nothing different. Maybe a little less. Transmission guy said he drove couple other 1500’s and they did same “bump”. Asked if I could drive them. Sure. Took 4 5.7 1500’s for test drives with a service person. Also had him drive mine. He did notice my “bump” when stopping. Three of the four test drive Rams never “bumped” once. One Ram did it twice, Once noticeably and once barely. I also test drove 2-3 Rams and none of them “bumped”. I definitely would have noticed because that’s one thing I look for when test driving - how transmission shifts. Talked to head service manager. He said nothing they could do anymore. Computer learns how you drive and my Ram has learned my driving. I asked why my test drive Rams didn’t “bump”? He said they probably eventually would. Say what!!! Said my driving habits of coming to a stop slowly caused the “bump”. (Insulting). He kept talking in circles with the ultimate ending of nothing to be done unless Chrysler says there’s a problem. (Realize this is my recollection and service manager would probably have a different recollection). I did get an 800 number to call a higher on the chain person from a more sympathetic service person. Service manager also mentioned “bump” could possibly work itself out after 10,000 miles. Ya right. Let’s put this guy off and hopefully he’ll just accept his poor shifting transmission. It’s been two days since I got the Ram back. Still ”bumps” shifting from 2 to 1. Annoying Annoying Annoying! I can’t except “They all do it”. They can’t. I’ve driven 8-9 Rams and only one did the “bump” as mentioned above. I didn’t get any paperwork of what work they did. Have to do that. I would like to hear from those of you who have noticed or have the “bump”. Can’t imagine I’m the only one. I’m a very unhappy camper. First Mopar I’ve ever owned. Thanks for reading this long post and looking forward to reading your responses.

Had it early on too - waited out to 5k and it seemed to be less apparent but was still there - had the trans software updated and it was nearly gone (this is on an eTorque hemi); I noticed it downshifted really slowly, causing it to catch 1st and bump down.

Good luck with that! Have you pulled the battery terminal and let the ECU reset (stomp on the brake when the cable is removed to let ABS use up residual power) and then go drive some stop and go to help it learn to downshift better.

Had a real noticeable bump on a test drive back in Sept/Oct 2018 to the point of "what the h*** was that". My Ram however has no issue.

Mine does this half the time with 4200 miles on it.

Truckdriver,

Thanks for reply. No, haven’t pulled battery cable yet. Wii try that.

Joshohol,

Have you tried to correct through dealership? If yes, what happened or what did they do?

I have a 2019 that did that. At about 3000 miles, the truck wouldn’t start. Had to get it jumped which took some time before it would run. I decided to take it to the dealer and got about 100 yards before the tranny decided it would not come out of 1st. In the end, the dealer kept it two days and reprogrammed the ECU because something in the transmission module got corrupted. The bump isn’t as noticeable and I have over 10,000 miles.

Update on 2 to 1 “Bump”.

Went in for appointment for a drive this morning with a “Technical Adviser” from FCA. Checked in and later saw him come in and talk with head service manager. They finally came out to see me 10 minutes late of appointment time. Proceeded to take a test drive. Less than a quarter mile into drive, Tech. Ad. says pickup seems to be shifting normally. Had stopped about 5-6 times and “bump” was there. At least he waited until we drove it a ways. I told him “that’s what I expected him to say”. Crickets. Drove more stopping many times as we went. “Bump” there to some degree just about every time. Tech. Ad. did finally acknowledge something was not right. He drove it and it “bumped” for him. I drove again back to dealership. I should mention that I told him of Posts on here of other owners having this problem. He said you have to take what is said on forums with ”a grain of salt”. I said, “Why would these owners lie?” Crickets. At dealership, took 1500 into see the top transmission mechanic. Plugged in for diagnostics and Tech. Ad. and him talked. Couldn’t hear what was said. Head service manager came and went during this time. Finally Head service manager comes over and says they’re going to see what happens installing a valve in transmission. I asked, “what if that doesn’t solve the problem?”. Let’s go ask the Tech. Ad. was his reply - passing along the decision. Now, the next part is a little difficult to follow logically.
I asked Tech. Ad. “What if valve doesn’t ’ solve problem and it still shifts poorly?”
Answer, if that doesn’t work, then I’d have to say the transmission shifts normally. Say What?
I say, So you’re telling me after being in to dealership 3 times to fix the poor shifting, and that after throwing parts at it (valve - which they don’t know if it will fix problem) and it doesn’t solve it, you then say it’s shifting normally? If it shifts normally, (according to him) then why would you have it in the shop 3 times to fix? Why does everyone feel the “bump”? Now, I’d love to hear how that sounds logical to anyone with common sense.
Tech. Ad. replies that all transmissions shift differently and learn how the driver drives.
I said, I don’t buy that and I’m not going to stand here and argue about how transmissions work. I’ve driven 8-9 other 1500’s and they don’t shift like mine.
Went to desk to setup valve replacement date.
Nobody, so far, with FCA wants to take responsibility for the poor downshifting of this vehicle. They acknowledge the “bump”, but won’t say it needs to be fixed. Apparently their philosophy is, try to fix it and if you can’t - just say “it’s normal”.

I am no expert, but pretend to be one. Is there some way of having the transmission forget everything it has "learned", and reset it to factory defaults? I did that for my throttle body, and the issue i had went away.

Sounds like you are dealing with the same type of dealership I did when I first brought my truck in, after having it for 2 days. In addition to a very hard bump from 2-1, it would also slam into gear so hard it caused the truck to jump forward. This was with just 122 miles on it, and it did not do it when I drove it off with lot with 44 miles. They had the truck for 3 1/2 weeks and gave me the runaround every time I called for an update until I finally got Ram Cares involved. Finally, they ended up just putting a whole transmission in it since apparently they could never figure out the cause. It will occasionally bump from 2-1 still, but it is not very frequent and not bad enough I worry about it anymore. My Titan would make a pretty good clunk while slowing down every time the converter unlocked.

Last time it was in they said they did reprogram to zero and its relearned my driving again.

I get this too...but it’s usually only when I’m in a prolonged stop and go environment (hello NY).

I’ve experienced this In other vehicles but not to the frequency I am with this one. And now I’m pondering a visit to the dealer...

Is this a classic or new body style? I only ask because there are lengthy threads about this in the 4th section with no resolution. Sometimes replacing control module is reported to fix it, but it also resets the transmission. I don't remember ever seeing anyone reply back months later and confirm problem was still gone. If it is the new body style that worries me. Make sure if you drive another similar model it has the same rear end my theory was the trans shifted too late with the 3.21 seems to shift correctly in the 3.92 trucks.

One of the reasons traded in my 2016.

Mine is the new body style. Don’t know what rearend gears were in the ones I test drove.

Took it in today for 9:00 AM appointment to get a valve installed. Head of service department said he “hopes this takes care of it”. My response, what if it doesn’t? He said that then it was acting normally. My response was if it’s normal, then why’d you try and fix it three times before? Crickets and then asked if I needed a ride home. I hope this does fix “the bump”. If it doesn’t, will have to go further up the chain.

I find it hilarious that these dealers don’t know what’s “normal” or not...and it’s even more hilarious that if they can’t fix it then it must be normal lol

I continue to experience the bump, even after 2 TCM flashes/updates.

My truck started developing this issue in the spring. It’s on its second round of flashes and the dealer said the issue has gotten worse. It’s taken the dealer a week to make my truck worse.
