So a coworker had her wheels stolen at work and so I wanted to do something before anything happened to mine. After lots of google searches I found one post on reddit where they did the same. So i gave it a try and this is what it looks like on mine. I do have mopar wheel locks as well. Ive done one wheel figure if they ever get stolen, wheels will stay together.. but thinking of maybe doing a second wheel. No test drive yet to see whaat its like.. but ill update. Its in the center so shouldn’t be a problem. The airtag is glued in and speaker is removed, then I placed some tape over the top just to blend it into the tan plastic.

Neat idea. But aren’t air tags only useful within a few hundred yards?

So I don't know what's going on, The Airtag once its installed on the wheel and on the truck, it has low signal or something and I have to be like right next to it for it to piggy back off of my iphone.
  • I saw somewhere it said place the metal cap of the Airtag facing away from metal and maybe it gets better signal so I placed it facing outwards but still the same.
  • I moved it from front wheels and placed in rear wheels away from engine, Still low signal
  • I thought it was maybe the Airtag that got messed up when I took it apart and removed the speaker, so I tried a brand new one that I had, and left the speaker in it, and its the same thing.
The one that had the speaker removed got placed inside the truck and has good signal now and can connect to iPhone from some distance. I popped off the center cap and just placed on top of the tire while the tire is still installed on vehicle and it gets good signal again.

I searched and searched and have seen where people state that it passes signal through walls and metal when they place it in metal pots, but I Feel like the metal from Hub/Axle/Brakes/Wheels somehow blocks the signal since its thick heavy metal parts.

But the end of the story is, if wheels ever do get removed and it piggybacks off of someone's phone it should have better signal and show me where it is. once its away from all the metal parts. and hopefully before it gets installed on another vehicle. I mean once installed on the vehicle it still piggybacks on a phone but not as much as my other airtags.

So for now I'll leave it installed. I will also be etching my Vin Number into the wheels, which I know everything can be removed, but maybe it can be found before they remove Vin number from the wheels.
