Since I'm rapidly approaching the 12,000 mile mark, I decided to check the condition of the air filter. I was surprised to find a multilayered mesh-type pre-filter that is permanently attached to the upper air filter housing. I'm guessing it's to keep leaves and other large debris from getting to the replaceable air filter.

No it’s a carbon filter. Keeps the carbon emissions from coming back out after you turn off the truck.

Also it’s the second layer not the first. So any debris will first get caught by the air filter. Then there’s the carbon filter. Then in reverse coming out of the engine.

All part of the Green New Deal :ROFLMAO:

Can't tell who's joking....

Is there a nice way of removing it or just the brute force destroying it way ?
Just popped it off using a small screw driver. It breaks the plastic tabs, but thats the way it was made.

Yes they are real. They have been around for a while but are making their way into more and more vehicles. They reduce pollutants from going back out from the engine bay into the air. I’ve read mixed reviews whether they actually restrict airflow. Many delete them just in case. Aftermarket CAIs don’t use them.

Engineering Explained did a video on this recently with his Subaru and found a 1%-3% improvement, though he said the difference in his case would be imperceivable.

The airbox on these trucks is pretty large. I doubt it makes a noticeable difference removing it, and I didn't buy this TRUCK for "performance".
