Adding Passive Entry: How-to

Does anyone know part numbers for the 2021 Big Horn with Hydro Blue Pearl paint?

If anybody doesn’t want to spend the money for the entire door harnesses and rear facia harness, and doesn’t feel like building the add on harnesses with the parts, let me know and I can build them for you-

Hi how much for the harnesses? Considering buying them. Thanks.

Thanks for this thread! I bought the kit from Nismopar and following this guide made it pretty easy.

Having a bit of trouble.

Finished the installation of the driver side passive entry door handles and went thorough ALPHAOBD perfectly fine. The driver side passive entry is not working.

I decided to get started on passenger side and then ran into a different problem. The window for the passenger side is glued in! Is that a common thing? I can see black glue on both of the connections for the pass gee window, where the driver side had none.

Is this something I need to use a heat gun or something else to get the glass out?

As for the driver side not working, outside of just taking the whole door apart again, is there anything I can check to trouble shoot? All the connectors seemed to go in smoothly

Suppose I'll try the tailgate now and see if I can get that working.

What do you mean glued in? The bolt won't come out because it's glued in? You remove the bolt and not the window from the white piece.

I mean there is glue between the clamps and the glass. The bolts loosen just fine, but the glass won't move when I lift on it. When I did the driver side, the glass came right out. When I losen the bolts and pull up on the glass on passenger side, the glass does not budge.

Remove the bolt completely

I'm not sure how the system responds to only a portion of the function installed.

I would wait until you get everything installed then make the software changes to see what happens before you tear back into anything.

I have the same kit but haven't installed it yet. My plan is to install everything before I making the AlfaOBD changes so that the entire function is there before I activate it.

Just my .02

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking. The passenger door passive entry setting was the only one in AlphaOBD that didn't stick.

I'm not looking forward to taking that wire harness off the door again, it's a pain in the butt to take off and put back on. I had to do it 3 times yesterday, next time I'll try to do it during the day so it's not so hard to see.

For clarification, I only have the drivers side installed on mine. I also have the rear antenna installed. And everything works fine. I haven't done the passenger side yet.

Make sure eye fob is in your pocket and you can remote lock unlock with it. Then test the door handle. If it still doesn't work, there is either an issue with the wiring or programming or both.

Can also confirm, that the system should still operate with only a portion of it installed. I did my driver’s side first and it worked fine. I added the passenger side a day later, and the tailgate portion a few days after that.

as far as troubleshooting goes, I’d double check your settings in AlfaOBD first since that is the least painful and time consuming to correct. Did the passive entry option show up in your Uconnect screen? And if so, is it turned on? If that doesn’t do it, I’d then look at your wiring. What install method did you take? Did you buy the passive entry harnesses from Jimmy, make your own, or buy from another kit?

I missed that, I didn't know you could check the setting in the UCONNECT screen. I will check that on my next break between work calls.

II did go through a 2nd time on by one and reflashed with AlfaOBD again after it didn't work the first time to double check the settings and to make sure I didn't miss anything. Still no dice.

I used the harnesses from Jimmy, but it's possible I have a wire reversed (there's only 2, but who knows). I will also do a continuity check before putting things back together I should be able to test the wire continuity without taking the door apart. I can get to the harness from the door handle and then the wires go to the door plug so that's all mostly painless (Although I hate that door connector, I have to find a better way to press those bottom clips, I need a better tool for that).

Really hoping I can get the passenger side done tonight.

One thing that was weird to me is I bought my truck new but the inside of the door looked like it has been messed with prior to me working on it. A screw fell out when I first took the door apart (silver scree) and I found a screw where someone had gone back and made a wider washer with plastic to get the door screws to work/fit.

OK, checked the settings on Uconnect, passive entry shows there as follows. See attached image.

I'm starting to think I got the wires swapped. I put the pins in and took them out like 5 times because I kept forgetting to route the wires through small openings first and had to redo it. I probably messed it up. I'll work on it again tomorrow.

I’d think it has to be the wiring then. Double check those for proper locations and also make sure they seated properly in the connector. And please don’t take this the wrong way, but I’d also double check that you have the harness connected to the new passive entry door handle as well. I say this because I also did this job at night and I nearly skipped that step due to the harness falling in behind the carrier plate when I was reassembling everything lol. It is a relatively involved job and something simple like that could have been overlooked.

Pretty sure it's got to be the wiring (most likely I plugged the wire into the wrong slot or it didn't seat properly).

I actually disconnected and re-connected the handle twice, and also tried swapping it with the other passive entry handle that I got for the passenger side just to make sure it wasn't a defective handle but that didn't affect it either.

Hoping to get the wiring check and the passive done tomorrow.

Don't disassemble the door to check, use an Ohm Meter to trace the wire.

Took a chance and ordered some parts. I can confirm these colors match the Hydro Blue Pearl paint.

I’m planning on doing this, it’s probably the most annoying feature missing from my Grand Cherokee Trailhawk.

That said, I have a ‘21 Built to Serve and it has black, somewhat textured, door handles. Any idea on how to find the appropriate part number for the handles? I guess I could replace all 4 with the the shiny black or just go body color (Bright White), but would like to keep the look if possible

Thanks in advance
