My heater core started leaking 2 weeks ago. I disconnected the feed and return lines at the pump and did a bypass loop.
Local private shop did the core swap.
When I dropped it off told them the dealership looked into a intermittent A/C issue. Some days it would blow cold air, some times it would not.
Dealership said the refrigerant charge was low, and chaeged it back up. They then said the mechanic found the high side schrader was slowly leaking refrigerant.
They wanted a little over $400 to change the schrader valve.
I elected not to do so at that time due to summer was ending and fall was around the corner.
Now the shop that did the heater core, independent shop with a Ram certified mechanic who works every other weekend there.
The certified ram guy did the heater core, and the shop evacuated the A/C system prior to core work being done. When they went to recharged the refrigerant, it would only take half of the required amount of refrigerant. They checked the pressure on The high and low side lines and had 60 psi on both lines.
They said the compressor is bad and appears to have a stuck reed/valve causing the pressure issue. This is also only allowing 1/2 of the amount of refrigerant required to go into the system.
Now for the record, the mechanic who did the heater core swap is a certified RAM mechanic and works at a local dealership. My son knows the guy and confirmed this as well. However he did not do the evacuation or recharge of the A/C system, the shop owner did and told me the compressor issue.
Truck has 186,000 miles on The clock and counting.
My question is, does this sound possible? Is there something the shop owner may be missing like a pressure switch ?
I don't have a problem doing the compressor, just don't want to spend the money to end up not fixing the problem.
Unfortunately, I do not know enough about the workings of a A/C system to make a educated prognosis.
Any input is greatly appreciated.
