Hello all.

I just bought my first truck and now I'm wanting to do some customizing. So far I've gotten Weathertech floor liners forthe front and back, front windows tinted with 20% 3M Colorguard, installed wheel-to-wheel running boards, bought but not yet installed Ram mud flaps, skid plates, bed liner, and a tonneau cover.

Next week I'm having Line-X do undercoating and rust proofing.

On Jan 4th, I'm having a transparent coating installed on multiple places on the truck, and frankly I've forgotten all of those places, but it includes the front end, lights, hood, A pillar, the door handles, and the door edges.

Now I'm looking at doing a lift, and I've decided on the ReadyLift 3.5", but I'm having a heck of a time understanding how I'm supposed to pick out wheels and tires that will fit.

I've been told by the lift installer that the OEM offset for my Truck is 19, and that if I wanted to be able to make full, tight turns without any rubbing that I should get a wheel with an offset between 0 and 18. I've also been told that if I went with the 18, then my tires would stick out 1mm further than OEM.

I don't really want my tires sticking out to the side, as I don't want crap being thrown all over my truck.

So here are my questions:
1) If I stayed with a 20" wheel, can I get any wheel width as long as the offset is 18? Do I need to look for wheels with +18 as the offset, or -18 as the offset?
2) Can I go with a 35" tire on a 20" wheel?
3) How would I find out what tire size I need to have? I'd like to get the Nitto Ridge Grappler.
4) According to the link below, my OEM wheel width is 9" and the OEM tire width is 10.8". Is that really correct?
https://5thgenrams.com/community/threads/wheel-and-tire-overview.2246/
5) The same link shows the OEM Bolt Pattern, OEM Thread Size and OEM Center Bore. Do I need to choose a new wheel that matches all of those?
6) If you have a 19 RAM without air suspension and you've done a 3.5" ReadyLift lift, could you please share your wheel and tire dimensions, and if there's any rubbing or issues with turning?

Thanks!

Chris

Hello Chris, I have a 3 1/2” RC lift and run a 35x12.5 tire on a 20x9 wheel with ‘0’ offset. The tires did rub. I had to trim some plastic on the lower rear of the front fender wells. With the 0 offset the tires do stick out from the body of the truck more than stock. A more positive offset would keep them tucked in and may allow for less or no trimming of plastic in the fender well. The more negative the offset the farther out the tire would be. I did want a slightly wider stance but didn’t want to go to far but that is just me. For the winter I run a 275/65 on my stock 20’s which is more narrow than the 35’s and with the stock 20’s having the +19 offset it keeps them tucked under the fender well so less crap is throwed on the truck like you mentioned.

Thank you for your response. I was going to ask what specific wheels/tires you have, but I saw them in your signature which is very helpful.

I’d like to ask a couple of follow up questions to make sure I fully understand.

You said your tired rubbed with your 0 offset wheels that stick out further than OEM and “A more positive offset would keep them tucked in and may allow for less or no trimming of plastic in the fender well.”

When you say “positive offset”, do you mean any offset greater than +0, so like +5 would be more fully under the truck than +0, and +18 would be even more under the truck than +0 and +5?

I’m assuming that since OEM offset is +19 and if I buy a wheel with +18 offset, the wheel will stick outside the truck by 1 mm, and a +0 offset wheel would stick out 19 mm. Is that correct?

Do you know of a website that I can search for wheels with a specific offset? I think at this point I’m probably more likely to go with +18 over +0.

Once I find a wheel I like with a +18 offset, I’m assuming that any 35” tire for the wheel diameter (most likely 20 or 22) would fit.

You are correct with the offset. The factory +19 is tucked under the fender 19mm more than a 0 and 38mm more than a -19 for example. However, your second question regarding the OEM offset of +19 and going with a +18, if that would stick your tires outside the truck 1 mm? If you had the exact same tires on a +19 and a +18 then yes, the actual tire would be 1mm farther out on a +18, however, it doesn’t necessarily mean it will stick out past the truck itself. The factory wheels and tires are tucked under the fender well fairly far meaning there is some distance to be had before the tires are sticking out past the truck itself. I have my stock wheels with winter tires on now. These are 275/65 so larger than stock tires with a OD of 34.09 inches and a width of 10.98 inches. As you can tell from the pictures, you could go maybe an inch wider tire on these (meaning 1/2” farther out with 1/2” farther in also) stock rims and be ‘even’ with the side of your truck. I would guess to say a 35x12.5 on a factory offset of +19 would be awful close to even. Like I have mentioned before, my 35’s on 0 offset do stick out. I’m not aware of any tire website that would tell you if the wheel/tire combo would stick out past the truck itself but I may be wrong. I get all my info from years of trial and error on different trucks and a local truck shop I have been with for 20 years. In your case, it may help to talk directly to someone at a local truck tire shop. Hope that is clearer than mud! Best of luck!
