I've read 50/50 decision on this matter with the 5.7 hemis what's your guys thoughts is 5w30 safe to run

The usual suspects that turn these 20W/30W threads into train wrecks I'm sure have seen this thread title already. Yes, I know I'm one of those suspects.

But impressed with the discipline so far.

i seem to remember the manual stating 5w30 is acceptable if 5w20 is unavailable

Don't worry, that research would have resulted in you spending hours reading some rather interesting threads, but in the end would result in no definitive conclusion to which is better.

In the end, it's what you're comfortable with and prefer to believe in. You can run either, it's your choice, but ideally get one that meets Chryslers MS-6395 on the back label and change it every 5,000 miles or 1 year.

Appreciate that

Or every 7500 miles.

What makes a 5w-30 a 5w-30 and not a 5w-20? It's the measured HT/HS value at 100 degrees celsius. When the oil is colder, say, at 0C, it will be much thicker, maybe a 5w-40. When it's at 150C it's thinner, maybe a 5w-20 at that point.

Shorter answer: yes you can safely run different grades of oil in your truck because oil itself changes viscosity with temperature.

Short answer: run 5w-30.

Wow, this hasn't even gotten past 1 page yet.
Must be cause there's like 10 other threads on oil.
Now the question should have been "Can I run 5w30 semi-synthetic Walmart oil?"
Then we'd cover all the bases; viscosity, quality and brand names. Oh and maybe ask about using an oil conditioner as well.

This seems like click bait, but my thoughts are thicker the better. Was using gear oil but had an epiphany using my chainsaw. Bar and chain oil is my new go to. I am still working on incorporating axle grease but have encountered some set backs
