5.7 Hemi - Normal Rust? 6k Miles

Just took a quick look see under mine, and the drive shaft is black. It has a satin painted coating of some sorts. 5/18 build date.

Oh I'm pissed.. Now to see what the hell is actually on my vehicle.. And will the dealership fix it. Has 6k miles on it and factory warranty if that's the case it's probably voided.

I wrote up a comment earlier about the P preceeding the part number making it a Mopar Performance part and not the original equipment but deleted it because I wasn't 100% sure and didn't want to spread mis-information. I just talked with a family member who was a warranty admin for FCA and he thinks that it has definitely been replaced.

Could the difference be 4x4 vs 4x2 - or short bed long bed ?

- Go Slow-Mo and look at that Drive Train two pieces. 5:55 Mark

(n) I wish it was 4x4, Guess I should of disclosed that information at the start eh? :) I picked the 4x2 up used w/ 6k miles for a hell of a good price had to jump on it.

Future reference if anyone else has this issue.. They replaced it under warranty and it's fully coated.d

Toss your truck info in your sig, it helps a ton when asking for help. Glad they hooked you up with a new driveshaft though, looked a little too porous to be normal surface rust from your pictures.

The difference in materials is definitely because of the 4x2, they use the aluminum on the 4x4's for weight savings. The two piece construction for the 2wd models is required to reduce vibrations because of the length of the shafts. The shafts have to be much longer due to the lack of transfer case behind the transmission. I'm willing to be even long wheelbase 4x4's get the two piece shafts as well, except in aluminum.

I got the 4x4 crew cab with 6.5 bed and mine is a 2 piece all black, not aluminum. Got mine brand new from dealer. So maybe it is determined by tthe length.

I will check mine tonight as well. I have the 6'4" bed. Got mine from the dealer as well so I am interested in what I will find. Sitting at work thinking about it is not making the time move any faster.

So as I mentioned, I have the 6’4” bed and mine looks like the 2 piece painted. Interesting!!

Brandon982/OP,

What is your build date of your truck? Even your muffler looks older than it should be...do you have any other pictures underneath your vehicle front rear sides etc???

Does the fact that the Limited has the air ride suspension, hence the vehicle can raise and lower explain the 2 piece?

Nope, the air ride does not over travel the suspension, so no need to lengthen it. Also, I have an air ride Laramie Crew 5'7" box with the one piece aluminum. The two piece shafts must be steel for cost savings, or somehow two steel shafts are still lighter than one big Aluminum one.

I have the same configuration as you (Crew cab, 6-4 bed, 4x4) and I have an aluminum one piece shaft.
