I had my 2021 with 57K miles in the shop yesterday for routine service, the latest recall, and to have the speedo calibrated for larger tires. I picked it up, no problem. Drove to an event and started with no problem. Went to leave the event and would get a single click when I tried to start it. The tow truck driver whacked on the starter and it didn't do anything. The dealer looked at it this morning and said the starter is dead. I bought it in February and it has never once given a sign of trouble starting, it surprises me that the starter went from good to dead like that.

The starter on my 2021 Bighorn with 75k miles died in May. I got the single click too, so slid underneath with a hammer, gave it a tap, and it started up. I installed an aftermarket starter and it's working fine ever since. The two dealers nearest me were over two weeks out for appointments. Who can wait that long?

Starters are usually very easy to replace. I'd never had one take more than 30-40 minutes. This one took a few hours because it is really hard to remove the bottom bolt on the starter. If I remember, I had to use three different socket extensions of different sizes and at least one (maybe two) knuckles to get the socket on the bolt. Other than that bolt, it is a pretty straight-forward job.

Short follow up but the dealer replaced the starter. Before the new starter I was getting 12.7 to 13.4 volts on a new AGM battery. After the new starter I get 13.7 to 13.9 volts. Almost seems like a short in the starter causing parasitic draw.

You can also use jumper cables to manually power up the starter. Or at least see if the solenoid is pushing the gear out. Works better than tapping on the casing.

Just saw this thread and my starter also went out at exactly 57,000 miles.😲

Here is my experience….

all things considered they are pretty cheap
103.17 for a mopar reman
197.58 for a new mopar
from BAM WHOLESALE. they are my new goto for mopar parts

That’s great unless you don’t want a reman and have to buy a brand new Mopar from the dealer because you need it immediately. Every single dealer around me was exactly $299.

Ordering at a discount would have shut me down for at least 3 extra days waiting for shipping.

Did you add it to the cart? The price is shown as $197.58 for the new starter, but when I added it to the cart the price changed to $272.58 because of the $75 core charge. Add in shipping and it's over $300. Not sure if you can turn the old one in at a local dealership for a core refund or if you have to ship it back to BAM. I'd definitely go with the reman'd starter if I didn't need the truck right away. It's also interesting that the core charge for the reman'd starter is only $40.

I paid a $75 core charge for brand new MOPAR from the dealer. That was on top of the $299.
