2025 Ram 1500 Hurricane SO towing test

TFL Truck tested the SO pulling a 11,000 trailer in 91 to 98 degree heat up a long 2 lane road. They had previously tested a 3.5 Ecoboost and Chevy 6.2 1500. Both of those trucks had overheated and they had to stop. The Hurricane made it all the way up with out a problem. But after they stopped the low oil pressure warning came on for a minute. I'm guessing the 0W-20 oil was very hot and thin and at idle, not building enough pressure and once it cooled off, the pressure increased. It sounds like if you're gonna pull it hard and in the heat, use 0w-40 oil.
It was steep enough that on the gravel, they needed to engage 4x4
 
I would not consider that a fail... Ram for the win!!!
Agree, especially considering the light came on at 20 psi which is only ~2 psi below what it normally runs at idle.
 
It looks like heat is the main reason the new 2025s have a lower tow rating than the old Hemi. This must also be why the HO has a lower rating than the SO. More power, more heat. I know a bigger radiator and trans cooler would cost more but it would give the customer what we want

If thats indeed the issue, the aftermarket will fix that
 
I bet they lugged the damn engine the whole way up too. Not sure the to/haul mode on these new trucks but if the revs are below the torque peak - say less than 2,500 rpm - that’s relying on tons of boost, ergo heat. Not to mention less coolant flow.
 
They let the truck decide on the gear/rpm selection. The zf transmission do a really good job of gear selection for me

IIRC the water pump is also electric, which means it's independent of engine rpms and it will stay on and cool the turbos when the engine is off hot.

HO recommends 0w-40, I'd run that in the SO too :)

Interesting. If the pump is indeed electric and the trans tuning is good, that could well be why they did so well to make it all the way to the top!

There is more than one cooling circuit on the hurricane, one of them is a low temperature circuit which is cooling the turbos through an air/water heat exchanger, this circuit is driven by an electric pump and that water pump is still running after the truck is shut off (when needed).
 
Yesterday I towed my boat and trailer, about 6000 lbs and I locked out gears 7-8. At 55 MPH in 6th gear it towed great. Seemed like it had plenty of power running just over 2200 RPMs I think.

What was the oil temperature at the end of that run?
 
At the end of the TFL Truck run it was 235F. Not crazy hot. Water was 234F. Trans Temp was 225F.
Thank you. We tow a horse trailer and have never seen much over 217. The trans and water temps are also far higher than what I have seen. This is the 5.7 but that is pretty hot. If I were seeing oil temps near 230 or higher I would go with a higher viscosity.
 
So my 2012 Audi S4 oil temps run at 230-235F at highway speeds. My assumption is that the water temp, which I can't monitor, is darn close to that. It's a 3.0L Supercharged 90 Deg. V-6. Obviously, not moving nearly the same weight but I've done oil sampling over the years and they've been perfect. I believe that modern synthetics can run safely all day at 250-260F. So 235F, no concern at all. I would say that the TFL towing test was brutal and 235F is perfectly fine and not too far above the 3.0L's normal engine oil temp of 205-215.

HO has lower tow rating because it's onlt available in higher trim levels with more curb weight, due to more features/options
 
Also, due to that video, RAM engineers reviewed the source code for the oil pressure warning and discovered they had miss programmed one of the tables and there was a software update released to address it
