Hey Guys,

Just picked up my 2020 Limited Ecodiesel and I am wondering about a factory elevated cold start idle.

When I start the truck after a few seconds the idle bumps up to 1100 or 1200rpm which leads me to believe there is a high idle feature but I always thought it would drop if I were to put my foot on the brake to shift into gear. It doesnt, and I end up having to put the truck in gear at a pretty high rpm. Seems strange....

This is even after a couple minutes of idle yo warm up. It eventually does drop to regular idle speed but I'm surprised that it allows to be put in gear at that rpm.

New to RAM's so forgive my ignorance...

Thanks!

mines the same way, doesn't jump when i put it in gear so I'm not too worried about it

Yeh, I dont notice a jump either but seems strange to allow it to engage so high. All.my other trucks would drop the when the brake was pressed.

Thanks

Hmmmm....Have not noticed. My garage is heated so I really have not experienced a cold outdoor start yet.
Oddly enough, diesels do not typically make any temperature until they are put under load.

I've noticed this as well, auto start, high idle, when i get in and hit the start button it drops down. Might be a method of warming up? I don't know. Anyone getting the Cold weather grille cover?

Remote start mine every morning and its high idle. I hop in and hit the start button and the idle comes back down. If I don't put it into gear pretty soon the idle comes back up to to the cold start idle. As soon as my foot hits the brake and I go into gear, the idle drops down to where it should be. So odd that everyone is having mixed results.

Mine is the same as this but I was expecting the idle to come down when you hit the brake. It doesnt, only once you shift it comes down.

I have it. I got the cold weather package on mine. I took a quick look for the plug in cord yesterday and could not locate it?!?!

Have you tried putting it on? Is it one or two covers?

I didn't. I think it is one big cover with a "RAM" logo. I do not think i will need it?

You'd probably use the cover before the block heater from what I've heard. Apparently the block heater is for cold starts below negative but the cover helps for any temperature under 30 degrees.

My cover has the ram logo too but it also came with a little strip one for the lower grille

My Eco-Diesel has the high idle as well, test drove a Cummins 2500 and Duramax they do the same thing when cold. I have to say this Eco-Diesel warms up quickly and I do not think you will need the grill cover under most circumstances, as I think with the radiator shutters helps with the warm up. My lowest temp was 0 degrees in Minnesota last week and did not plug it in, started no problem.

I have a 2016 Ram diesel, I do have the cold climate with the front cover - driving in WI it has really helped and does look sharp. I just ordered a 2020 with the cold group so hopefully it will look as sharp. As for the high RPM, before the emission recall on mine the RPMs were lower, after the recall (software fix) the RPMs did not change but it had a lag in throttle response time while cold. After a second software flash related to the emission issue I noticed the RPMs did increase a little and throttle lag was less. I wonder if they are increasing the RPM to get the engine to warm faster for emission qualifications? I'll have to dig a little deeper when my new one arrives.

The truck isn't instantly warm just because you touch the brake pedal, so I wouldn't expect the high idle to go away until the truck is actually warmed up. Mine is most noticeable with HVAC turned on too. I'm glad it's all automatic and I don't have to initiate it like on older diesels.
