1st oil change?

Got a 2022 Rebel, called my local dealer about my 1st oil change (6 months next month) & the guy in service said since it has synthetic oil in it from the factory & that it isn't due until 9 months (no way I'll bust the mileage). I was pleasantly surprised, but had never heard this before? Anyone else hear of this?

The 2022 models do come with synthetic oil from the factory. Now it’s a 0w-20 oil. I did the first oil change on my ‘22 limited at 5k miles at home and plan to continue doing so every 5k miles.

Curious why they went to 0w-20? Did something change with the motor?

I have a bunch of 5w-20 left from my current truck.

Got me…thought the same thing. Had a 2020 Laramie and the cap said 5w-20. But this 2022 says 0w-20….so that’s what I did.

My research shows that it just comes down to cold temp. Same viscosity. But someone can correct me on this.

Very little difference between the two. And you're right @arod412, the only difference is at cold start the 0w-20 flows slightly better at cold start. It really doesn't come into play unless you're seeing really cold temperatures, like norther states in winter. I made the switch to that for my 2021 at the first oil change.

I’m guessing the goal is to cover up lifter tick that everyone complains about at cold start. Surprised they didn’t change to 0w-20 many years ago if that’s the case. Hopefully not just a band-aide fix and there is a better reason for the switch.

I changed to full synthetic m1 on my 2021 and still used the 5/20 after the first 2k miles and the cold start tick complexity went away.

6k on it now and still gone.

I'm assuming you have a '22?? 0w20 only comes in a synthetic. I use full synthetic oils in everything I own because it is a superior lubricant and I don't care about the minor price difference.

I'm the same way, full synthetic in all four of our vehicles.

Either way, 0W-20 or 5W-20 are likely to be synthetic oils it's the easiest way to hit that cold viscosity number. I doubt it's going to make a difference if you use one or the other, the difference in cold viscosity is so small (3.8 vs. 4.1 cSt) that I bet by the end of the oil change a 0W-20 becomes a 5W-20 anyways.

I gotcha, I'll never hit the mileage, it will always be the time limit.
