Just bought a 2019 Limited with the multifunction, or as the window sticker calls it, the dual function tailgate.

The unicorn exists and qualified for the great deals they had going on this month. I was going to order a truck with exactly the features I wanted, but at the price lot trucks are going for, who could bring themselves to do that.

Apologies for the lack of quality. The one odd thing is the braces at the front of the bed. I believe they are part of the tailgate package...presumably to stiffen the bedsides when the barn doors are open. No one at the dealer had the answer. I have not seen them before, so I am guessing a tailgate necessity.A61A885D-2778-4EBE-BC5B-580BE97EE161.jpeg054AB7C4-CD68-4246-A39D-EBBC44702717.jpegC82D7964-8BC1-47AD-97A7-19066CEDE07E.jpeg4373A91B-8C6E-4130-893B-813AA5C76839.jpeg05038B80-E7D2-419D-8269-99D49BBB7450.jpeg2DC45C32-A13C-4E06-B90C-08CBCD806031.jpeg2100F6D9-4F84-4790-A108-834741D56C4F.jpegC8E1F12A-3719-4A2C-A36D-B39FB142B6E0.jpegFDBE5286-7832-4BBE-A554-8CC54A86A17E.jpegA07F3FC3-BF14-4436-91E5-2B2383E8D9B1.jpeg

Those braces are a bit odd but I think you are exactly right on their purpose. I'll bet some aftermarket folks will come up with replacements that do the same but add more functionality.

Thanks for the pics.

Wow sir that really has stepped up Ram’s game. I’m glad you’re enjoying the versatility it affords you and again welcome to the forum. :)

I noticed you have one tailgate cable with slack too. I guess those will just be with us until the end of time!

Yeah, honestly I do not think I have ever had a truck that did not start that way. They used to even out over time...we will see.

That’s really cool, I was at the media launch of the tailgate, I was under the impression that the only way to get the MFT was to get Rambox too, at least at launch.

In most respects the Ram solution makes more sense than the approach GM took, although I'm sure there are applications for that too. I have an acquaintance that works at a Chevy store and he doesn't seem to be enthused about the GM version. Too many complexities for all-weather operation, in his opinion.

Unfortunately I find the offset panel gap on the Ram tailgate visually awkward. Of course, I thought the 1961 Plymouth was pretty ugly, too.

Best regards,

I picked up my Limited yesterday with the Dual Function tailgate, and I asked the same question about the braces at the front, and no one knew what they were for either. My question is whether the Mopar hard tonneau cover will still work...didn't think about that when I bought it.

Here's mine. Bought it right off the showroom floor. The discount was ridiculous, but the inventory limited, so I took what they had. Only thing I didn't get was surround-view cameras because of the stupid Tow Group being added.

Hated it at first, Now I want it!! I guess in the next truck 4 years from now!

I get the functionality but can’t get past the offset line, I just visually hate it. Add that to the obvious tonneau cover issues and that you won’t be able to put a Bedrug classic or XLT on it, it’s a no for me.

Can’t think of any practical reason to need this and it’s ugly to boot

I like that it gives you easier access into the bed without having to reach over the tailgate. I'm not sure I like the look, but I don't like the look of Ram Boxes either.

My situation exactly. Not the truck I would have ordered, but when you can get $17k off, you compromise. I did not end of saving that much because I would have passed on the sunroof and bling wheels, which add up to a lot.

As far as the look, I agree. I hate the offset line. But I followed my wife home with it and you cannot pick it out on the black. However, I am a function over form guy. This is going to make it so much easier to get the bird dogs out of the kennels and the ammo out of the far reach in the drawers.

I'm with you regarding the function over form, especially in this case. I usually install a Bedslide into my trucks to make it easier to get cargo in/out. With the Dual Function tailgate, I'm not going to need a Bedslide, so I'm saving $1000. And, because the middle portion of the rear bumper dips to form a step, I don't need to add a rear step either, so there's another $400 saved. Win/win.
