180 degree thermostat

Did you guys remove the active shutters also? Also, does anyone know are the shutters tied to the fan temp turn on programming?
The grill shutters don't cover the entire radiator. They are tied to vehicle speed, but will also open up if engine gets hot. If your truck is running hot, the grill shutters are probably not the issue.

Its not running hot, average is about 190-195 now after full warm up and driving with airflow. I want to remove a couple shutters too for towing.

I could be wrong, but I don't think the grill shutters are active if you are using the tow/haul mode, just like MDS is disabled.

Ill have to see if they open when I enable tow/haul. I usually don't run in tow/haul mode because it hold the gears way too long sometimes and tough to get it to upshift.

I did, I just reached in with my hand and bent them a little and slipped them out. Left two rows near top and bottom to keep the structure intact and so the motor/electronics think it's doing something but there is a permanent whole in the middle of course.
Thx for the tip, did you have to remove the grille to accomplish this?

I just reached in IIRC, they are somewhat friction fit into place, if you twist them by pulling on the center of the slat then the edges will pop out with a bit of force.

Just did a good 400 mile trip, around 32-40* this is what the max temps looked like on the highway the entire time. Not towing anything but loaded up pretty good. Liking these temps much better since Im in for the long haul on ownership. IMG_9226.jpeg

I'm surprised your oil stayed lower than coolant with that long of a trip and those ambient temps. My oil hovers just above the coolant (my coolant temps match yours).

I have the prerunner bumper, it allows more airflow to the oil filter area. Also with the pacbrake relocation kit installed (it is not currently) it will run even cooler.

I had the pacbrake on as well, and removed the AGS, so it's not that. Possibly more airflow with that bumper but even in winter temps of -4 F and running down the freeway at 60 to 70 mph I never sat below coolant.

I'm guessing this was at the beginning of the trip, and not the end. My oil takes a little while to get above coolant temp, but always ends up higher than coolant temp.

Same, about 20-30 miles it takes over for me.

Well thx..most of my driving is highway..I love it's running 185 now..I used to get to the golf course after 45 min and my motor would smell like antifreeze and be sooo hot it concerned me....I do think I will just leave it alone now..if it gets to 2 something every so often I'm not going to let it bug me...thx for respon

Well they came up with the vvt..the lifter failures etc..to get better mileage..so whatever
Yeah exactly..if engineerz were perfect all those engines would not be failing right now.

This oil/coolant temp status was after hundreds of miles into the trip with the cool weather. Now just returned home and the ambient temp was much higher, nothing crazy but enough to get the readings in this pic. I think the PCM is closing the shutters to try to keep it around 203. I had it even hit 210 in the hills but my fan is programmed to come on at 210 and could tell because it would immediately drop to 190 after the fan kicked in. So I'm going to try removing a couple shutters and retuning the PCM to turn the fans on at 200. Crazy how much 30* increase in ambient can change so much. My end goal here is to be able to run in summer (hot weather) with the AC on / loaded/towing and keep everything at or below 200.

Also I run full syn oil and never go past 3500-4k miles since it was new.

Edit, for reference, also run the PPE aluminum trans pan which has cooling fins and +2 quarts, which helps to keep everything cooler as well.

Well I did some more tuning on the diablo, and can say that the shutters are indeed tied to the fan temp as I set the fans to 200 and the shutters stayed closed up until the exact temp the fans came on. Drove it around for awhile today 50 ambient and the highest it got was 200 on the dot idling for awhile. This is still with the full factory shutter setup.

Got out some of the shutters, had to remove the trim to get to them. Accidentally took out the middle one on the drivers side which is one of the shutters the actuator works so I left in the passenger side so it will still work whats left of the shutters. Nice big hole now, temps definitely lower and more stable everything around 185-190 now in 70* ambient. So I would say shutter removal would be a good idea with the 180 tstat.

Finally got some hotter weather and temps are where I want them to be. Stilk have to test pulling the camper, that is coming up and I will report back with the temps. Thanks to everyone with the tips and tricks.

Did you pull the shutters from the front or rear? I noticed if you pull the black liner on top of radiator you have access to the shutters. Otherwise the grill needs to be removed to access shutters from the front. Are they as easy to remove as mentioned w/o breaking anything?

That's marginally better than stock. I don't recall my HEMI running much warmer; you sure there's not something else going on? This is after driving 65 miles

Yes remove the liner on top of radiator. Leave the top and bottom rows in so the system doesn't collapse. Then remove the slats in between. There are multiple rows, 2 columns. Just reach in and force the middle of each slat out, it will bend/fold on itself giving room for the outside edges to slip out.
