Next-Generation Ram Pickup Will Take A Futuristic Turn

Ralph Gilles Hints At A Bold New Direction For Ram’s Next Truck Design

Stellantis Chief Design Officer Ralph Gilles says the company is already deep into the design phase of the next-generation Ram pickup, and according to him, it will bring a noticeably more futuristic look to America’s most competitive vehicle segment.

Fine by me. I'm not driving a truck to try to look cool or aggressive. If a more sweeped front leads to better gas mileage, then that's just a bonus. Just as long as it is still very roomy for passengers and has lots of cargo space and RamBoxes!

Although I would prefer they drop the glowing logos (at least the side one) - looks too ostentatious.

I see no gas fill(I know only concept).
Suicide doors!!!!
It better keep up with towability in all lines or they are dead.

Dodge has always tried to be different ever since the third gen came out. As long as it it does not look like a jelly bean I can be on board. I'm generally not a fan of Ford and GM styling especially the Fords.

"accumulated extra features and styling elements that drive up cost and complexity. Now, designers are re-evaluating what is truly necessary....So we’re starting fresh and asking what actually needs to be there.”

I like the stated philosophy, though I wonder who they are asking. Stellantis does not have a good recent track record when it comes to delivering brand new vehicles/options that people actually want. I am very interested to see the end product. I have said I am done buying new vehicles, but I still have quite a few driving years ahead of me...

Relax you guys. As with almost all concept vehicles, only a few things from that concept truck will make it to production, like the front end and maybe the tail lights. No way the next Ram 1500 will look anything like that truck.

I'm surprised no one mentioned the extendable bed and 50/50 split tailgate that converts to extended bed sides. It's intriguing but it's not even legal with the tail lights being hidden like that behind the extended bed sides. The open rear cab is ridiculous from a company that already has problems sealing the cab from water intrusion. :ROFLMAO:

This is an old concept truck that was put out a few years ago when talking about the BEV concept, probably has little to do with the next gen 1500. Just a design exercise.

Gilles has a great history, but some recent misses like the Wagoneer.

Is the Wagoneer a miss, or just a casualty of Stellantis’ inability to launch and support a new model appropriately?

Only if it makes The Jetsons flying car sounds when you touch the accelerator icon...

Probably both. Though I'm specifically calling it a miss on the design/styling side of things. Even if it was supported better and had less issues at launch, its just not a competitive or compelling design.

Personally, I trust the folks at FCA in terms of truck styling, although I still prefer the Gen4 styling over the Gen5 styling. That said, the Gen5 is still the best-looking trucks currently on the market, full stop.

AS SD Rebel said, the images of the truck in the article are from the 2023 concept, which means they were actually doing the design probably starting in 2020 or so. That old concept may or may not have anything to do with the current work being done on the 6th-gen Rams. Also, you can never really tell until you see the iron on the streets - photos never cut it where automotive styling is concerned. Gotta see it in real daylight, out on the streets.
.
BTW, I refuse to call it Stellantis - "Stellantis" are the EU-centric overlords that have done their darndest to ruin the American automotive spirit. And if you look at the manufacturer's labels on the door jambs, they don't say "Stellantis" anywhere, they say FCA. So anything good happening with Mopars, I give credit to FCA, i.e. the folks here in North America that are resisting the EU overlords and their namby-pamby EU-centric sensibiliities.

I actually liked it when it came out. Interior space was very good, and it looked like a Jeep product.

Definitely looks like a Jeep, interior is amazing, but the exterior is just a bit awkward looking for me. I think with a few minor tweeks, they can get it where it needs to be aesthetically on the outside.
