Kind of 'dog age my homework' scenario - A few weeks back the dog (8mo beagle) unbeknownst to me somehow chewed up an underseat wiring harness and ultimately caused a near total electronics failure in my '25 1500 Laramie. Initially thinking the shutdown was a defect issue, I dropped the truck at my local Ram dealer for warranty service.

Fast forward to yesterday - got the bad news and an approx $9k repair estimate to tear the truck up and replace the damaged wiring.

I basically said NFW and traded out for a '26 Bighorn Crew Level 2 Sport 4x4 SO in that new Molten Red color. For the trade, they basically backed out the repair cost, ran a plethora of rebates/discounts off the '26 sticker, gave me non-adjusted market value on the '25 + a free set of Mopar chrome steps. Couldn't have been nicer to me under the circumstances.

Dog's fate however, still to be determined.....

If you wanted the new truck, than not a bad deal . Otherwise, you could have had the truck repaired by insurance for whatever your comprehensive deductible is

So you paid for the repair in the form of a reduced trade value?

Did they want to replace the entire wiring harness, instead of splicing in a fix?

I'm guessing they expected you to file an insurance claim and then you wouldn't care what it cost to fix, and this way they could justify having a tech work on it for a month.

Yeah I could have filed a comp claim - I'm actually a commercial adjuster myself (not for auto), well familiar with the option. The estimate was to fully replace all damaged wiring, no cut/splice shortcuts.

I just decided it wouldn't be worth rolling dice on repairs after doing the trade math on the setoff between going out of pocket (whether in the form of cash or post-claim premium increase games, which yes, do occur whether fault or non-fault claims are involved). They actually did write off the majority of the repair costs (i.e. only subtracting the parts price from my trade value)

If there's any real humor in this it's only that my total policy premium to swap in the '26 only increased by $0.16 (yes - sixteen cents)....

I missed the part where you lost a truck because of a dog.
Sounds more like you got a pretty good deal.

You Just might think about a dog crate when traveling with the dog, otherwise ?????

Maybe but I doubt it - it was still running and driving when I brought it to them - just not much else. When I cleaned out my personal items on their service lot, part of the interior was already taken apart but nothing was altered. I presume they'll ultimately repair it correctly via a new harness install to preserve its remaining warranty.

We put ours in a kennel because he would chew up the driver's side seat belt. He earned his incarceration (no parole, either).

My dogs basically ruined the back seat of my 14 Tundra. Nothing chewed up but the seats and door panels took a serious beating.

Right now they are only allowed to ride in the back of my Wrangler. I have one of the mesh nets to keep them from jumping into the back seat.

As much as I would like to not ride them in the new truck in reality it is not practical. I picked up a Ruff Liners XL cover with door protection. I installed it a couple of days ago and it looks promising. I need to take my German Shepherd to the groomer next week so I plan on using that as a test run to see how good this cover actually works. The German Shepherd is really not my worry. My Black Lab is the chewer so she is the one to worry about.
