Transmission fluid change?!

Next time I’m going to bend up a 180° “hanger” tube to put in the filler hose so that it will hang in the trans fill hole while pumping.

Now that the drain plug is accessible I plan to drain and fill at 40k and filter/fluid at 80k. At 78,xxx my fluid looked excellent and the magnets had literally 0 trace of any metal.

Was happy to see that. Picked up enough filters to get me to 300k on services.

I ended up getting about 7 quarts in it before I ran it through the gear procedure then an additional .5. It wasn’t leaking anything at around 90° and from that to 100° it was very over filled. I’d say high 6 to 7 is probably the perfect fill. Might require a small top off at temp. I had a very small but steady stream out of the plug when I put it back in (rear end on jack stands and pan rails level to earth).

I think I saw in the video that's what they did to keep the hose in place too? I've definitely seen it before and since you mentioned it, I recall the struggle of trying to pump and hold that tube in place. Good suggestion to remember.

I used a fluid transfer pump like this and just cut the hose right before the valve and stuck the hose directly into the fill plug. After the first 5 qts, I would pump so much then just kink the hose with my fingers then pull the hose out, verify if its draining out, throw the open up end of the hose into one of the empty qt containers and continue until i got the correct level.

Edit: this is with the PPE pan so the fill plug might be smaller.

Just confirming, this was your first fluid change? If so, great to hear the fluid and magnets looked good!

Yep first change. I was aiming for sooner but weather and general busyness prevented it.

I tow frequently (stop and go in the city as well as long highway runs). About 4k lbs trailer locally and the same trailer with the truck near max payload on the highway.

I’ve seen much much darker fluid documented online. Mine had some color to it but looked great imo.

Didn’t really notice a different in operation(outside of being hyper focused on it now). Fluid takes much longer to get to temp and it appears maybe 8-10° lower but it’s winter so the real test will be summer towing.

I recommend if you're not comfortable doing it see if there's a reputable transmission shop in your area. I bought the blauparts kit myself but couldn't get the drain plug out and knew I'd have a fight with lifting the transmission. So instead of continuing to fight with it I called a local shop. They quoted me $150 for the labor. Been running for about 1500 miles on the new fluid/pan so far and it's doing great.

Awesome, thank you!

I'd like to see the receipt of what was included for $450. I'm guessing the pan/filter is $300-400 and the fluid is 6 quarts at $20-30 at the dealer.
yeah that is pretty much correct the pan/ filter was the biggest cost ,it is all in one.

I just went through this trying to install a B&M pan on my truck. If there was any good excuse for longtube headers and a dual exhaust the transmission pan makes a very good case for them LOL

I routed my fill pump hose over the exhaust and then zip tied around the hose/exhaust and that way the filler end stayed inside of the transmission. Before that it was a Pain in the @ss
Doesn’t this melt your filling tube when checking the fluid level while the truck is idling for the 86 - 100 degree fluid check?

Do any of you know what the percentage of fluid gets changed with this method?
I was told by a shop it gets about 90% of the fluid out.

I think it might even be a little less. If you look at the BlauParts packages, you get 6 quarts of fluid. I think our total capacity is somewhere around 9 quarts?

All the more reason to do it fairly often.

That makes sense. I realize the torque converter can't be drained.

I only did that on the initial fill, Once it was running and up to temp I had to manually hold the filler neck inside the fill hole and add the fluid while keeping the hose away from the exhaust

Just ordered the OEM pan/filter and mopar 8-9 speed fluid.
Pan has gone up to 400 bucks since my last service, fluid was still just under a hundred.
