Stellantis Wanted to Keep the HEMI® V8—But Tavares Said No

I don't agree at all. The 5.7 is a 20 year old engine, and it's still competitive with the 5.3, and 6.2 from GM, fitting between them in terms of HP and displacement and performance. It was neck and neck with the Tundra 5.7 and Nissan's v8s, they were around 400 hp; it's also competitive with the 5.0 Coyote, though that engine is more impressive as it makes the same power now with less displacement. So that's a healthy and excellent option to keep around, 20 year old design with a pretty solid reputation (other than a few lifter failures here and there) and still running with everybody else, what exactly is the issue?

So: "Time to end", no. "Time to start work on a successor for the future", yes.

If they would have stuck the 6.4 @ 475ish hp in as an option, it would have outperformed GMs 6.2 and all the other v8's and probably the ecoboost as well.

Absolutely nothing wrong with either engine, the real mistake was not putting in the 6.4 as an optional upgrade. That would have taken the pressure off the 5.7 to perform as the top engine. Just like nobody cares that the 5.3 isn't the strongest, because the 6.2 is available, if the 6.4 was an option then nobody would care too much that the 5.7 was "only" 400 hp.

Outfits like Georgia State Patrol, same for Michigan, Oklahoma, etc. state police would agree with you. They love their Charger Pursuit Hemis. Sure, the SUVs are roomier, but if you watch enough videos over on State Boyzzz you'll see that the Hemi-powered Charger Pursuit is the preferred vehicle for high-speed pursuits
.
I have seen a handful of StateBoyzzz videos where the primary pursuit officer in an Explorer or Tahoe will actually request that an officer in a Hemi Charger take over primary pursuit. And in the hands of a PIT-trained officer, the Chargers can PIT every bit as well as any SUV in patrol fleets. Georgia State Police prove the superiority of the Hemi Chargers in pursuit after pursuit, and NOBODY else PITs like the GSP. 100 MPH? No problem. GSP will PIT at any speed, as long as they have a break in traffic sufficient to not hit surrounding vehicles.

As per Mopar Insider, they are expected to bring US made Hemi 5.7L back into the 1500, starting maybe as soon as 2026 models, but as a base motor behind both Hurricanes and only on lower trims, likely Laramie / Rebel and below? Also a question on how soon they could actually start production on new engines in a new location on a short time table to make them available on 2026 models?

Either way, sounds great to me!

Gotta be honest, I am not looking for another truck but if Ram came out with a non-et V8 for the DT it could change my mind. I really like my truck and am not having issues with the et, but sometimes I think that is only a matter of time.

I wouldnt buy an et model and would have to figure out how to disable start/stop before I would spring for a new 1500. my '19 laramie 1500 ccsb 4x4 with 5.7 and 3.92 gears was the best truck I ever owned and I would still have it if we hadnt bought a 5th wheel trailer to tow. I want simpler not more stuff to go wrong.

I’m betting those lower based models will outsell the hurricanes.

That’s easy…

What i read suggested they are just using stockpiled Hellcat engines.

Edit: Sorry that was bringing back the TRX.

Well, TK's Garage on YouTube has had a stellar track record on this news over the last 6 months. And he's been saying for a while that the Hemi is back for Ram 1500, Hellcat engine stays in Durango for a while longer, and they're measuring/testing the new 2025 Charger to see if a Hemi will physically fit.

Then just today I saw a screenshot from a dealership highlighting the news that Hemi is back for Ram 1500, supposedly this summer, and the 6.4 is going to become an option (possibly in a sport truck, or possibly as an option on one or two trim levels only). So it looks like this is real....

And, they're taking Dodge/Ram back into NASCAR which means they are getting serious about brand image. So that lends credibility to the Hemi news also.....

They learned the hard way that you can't sell trucks with junk European engines under the hood. I think this is the start of a great new thing. I'm so excited.

Sweet! If they offer the 6.4 in a Laramie or Limited I will order one immediately! I won’t wait around again for them to screw it up and pull the option.
